    Help with 3680. got used. no info.

    I've got this 3680 from my ex who got it from his ex who bought it new from best buy early last year(wow grapevine there!). Anyway aside from what I can actually see on it, I have no idea what it came with or what I can do with it. I don't have any of the discs or papers for it and I wanted to do a clean swipe, but I can't :( I've cleared off what I could get to, but I'm wondering if there is anything else I can do.
    Is there a way to find out exactly what I am working with? He(my ex) said that it has no memory, that she took it out and kept it. I don't think that is true though, he knows nothing about computers. I know just a tad, but not much.
    All in all it is a pretty decent machine though. I have a dell something or other that I got last year thanks to this place and I love it! This thing could use a little tweeking and then it would be real nice.

    Does it boot to windows....does it have a hdd in it..??
    what all can u see on it....to check the ram open the back lid (the small one) and check if there is any ram....!!

    does it still have the NTI cd Maker on it?

    you will need to burn some disks,try Alt+F10 see if it gives you the option to burn some dvds..

    It boots to windows vista. I can't get the back off without a screw driver(which I do not have at the moment).
    hdd?

    when I hit alt+F10 it doesn't do anything, but it does show the software on here for NTI CD & DVD maker.

    burn some bootable dvds before anything else goes wrong. with nti. :D

    Download CPUz or PC WIZARD 2008 or EVEREST PRO....these will tell u a bit about what u r using.... :)

    people have been upgrading the CPUs in that model.... but that task may be a bit outta your experience level since it involves taking almost EVERY screw outta the loaptop and a TOTAL dissassembly..

    but adding ram is easy to do....

    and i know where you can get all the drivers for that model for XP or Vista.. but you will need a CD/DVD of the OS of your choice

    thanks so much! I'll try fiddling with it after I locate some blank discs.I don't have an OS disc except the one that came with my Dell. My brother has a vista OS package that he used to upgrade from XP, but I don't know if that will work?

    As far as my computer knowledge goes, it is all software based... I know almost nothing about hardware! I'm very afraid of screws :p

    well it has a celeron m 430 1.73GHz with 512MB PC2-5300 ram....rest is pretty much gibberish....but u cud upgrade ur bios if u want to....!!
    But if it is running fine without giving any problems....then there ll be no need.. :)
    since u r afraid of screws....i wud advise u to just upgrade the ram to 2gb PC2-5300 or 4200....!!
    I didnt see anything regarding the hdd....but cud probably upgrade it to a 7k200 or momentus 7200.2 if u want it to be a bit on the quicker side....

    YOU DO NOT WANT TO PUT VISTA ON THAT PC..

    you do need more RAM... since it only has 512Mb that's what i'd do first..
    then concentrate on finding a legitimate version of an OPERATING SYSTEM..

    it violates NBR rules for us to discuss putting a BORROWED or ALREADY INSTALLED version on a SECOND machine unless you have a multiple PC license (usually limited to schools and businesses)

    it came with vista on it... so it'll probably stay vista.
    I guess just add some more RAM and manually delete all the rubbish would get it running quicker? Otherwise it really is a good computer. I know I already manually deleted a lot of crapware off it, including the security it had on it and downloaded what I use on all my other computers. That halped it start-up a lot quicker.
    I use to have an acer desktop that I loved, actually I think we still have it and use it as a spare when needed. I'm not too suprised at how comparable the laptop is to it and how, as far as for my uses, after a little tune up it will probably run the same as my dell does for me.
