I know the computer is never really idle, but something causes the HDD light to flash at about 1-2 per second, even after some minutes of inactivity on my part. What is it doing and can/should it be stopped?

There is plenty reasons for HDD activity on idle .

It could be caused by the anti virus software , or even some modern ACER laptops, support even degrag on idle .

Vista its known to cause HDD activity , as part of control over the windows swap file .

You can isolate the guilty application , but needs some knowledge over windows , and the right tools .

This IS Vista of a very recent model Acer, but the firewall is disabled and the AV software removed. I would think that after a while the indexing software would run out of things to do. I somehow doubt that updating timers makes that HDD flicker.
