    Hello everyone,

Just recently i obtained an acer aspire 5630 (5633wlmi) notebook. On it was pre-installed Windows XP Media Center (OEM Version).

When i first launched the computer and i logged into Windows, i was prompted to create a recovery CD... which i did. I also noticed there were 2 partitions both FAT format.

However, i later installed Ubuntu (Linux) and reformatted my entire harddisk and deleted partitions.

Then i decided to try and install my own Windows XP Pro... this is where the problem started!

Right after i popped in my Windows CD and rebooted i got a blue screen error message. After long hours searching the net i found out that this could be due to missing SATA drivers and/or the intel matrix storage manager chipset.

Then i read about nLite and slipstreaming. So i made a new modified copy of my Windows XP Pro CD integrated with the SATA drivers and intel matrix storage manager chipset drivers. But this did not help!

The only method that did work was to modify my Windows XP Pro CD and integrate Service Pack 2. However, my system is now very unstable and i get a lot of error messages.

Any further advice would be greatly appreciated!

    Thx
    ABH

The first question I have is can your acer laptop see your hard drive on the windows installation screen when you boot off the disk.

If it can not then you need to get a USB floppy drive and load the drivers with F6 on startup (or slipstream them in like you mentioned).

If you can see the drive by default then install xp and load the chipset drivers first. Then work towards video / lan / audio / etc.

Currently i have my modified windows xp (+sp2) installed. As stated before this seems unstable to me. So i will try to put in my windows xp pro and reboot in order to post back... however, i'm not sure what to look for?

Should i look for the name of my hdd drive (hitachi hts541...) or for the ide ata/atapi controllers (intel 82801gmb/ghm...)?

sorry for the silly question! :D

    thx

Sorry I was not around earlier to reply / respond.

My first question is do you have an unmodified copy of windows xp? The first step is to rule out any possible hardware problems before we look into software. And if you modified the software as well that's just twice as much work for us ;)

I also run a modified copy of windows xp pro oem on my Acer 5672wlmi, however if everything is running fine in linux and prior to that as well, it almost sounds like you have a hardware problem.

I'm just going to run down the standard list of things to test first to see if your hardware is working fine.

Hitachi Hard Drive Diagnostics - http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/support/download.htm

    Memtest86+ - http://www.memtest.org/

If both of those clear fine then I would say your hardware is doing ok ;)

The next step I would say is to leave the windows install disk alone. :) I have done many changed or modified copies of windows with nlite and Ryanvm intergator.

Start with the default setup for xp pro and see if you are stable. If you can see your hard drive by default in the xp setup screen you do not need to slipstream the sata drivers into it :)

Report back when you get that far ;)

No worries about responding late... I was just hoping someone else would reply too! ;)

Yup I have an unmodified original Windows XP Pro CD. (I also have an unmodified original Service Pack 2 CD.)

The blue screen error only occurs after I insert my original unmodified Windows XP Pro CD and reboot.

I diagnosed my notebook yesterday and found no issues. 4 pass 0 errors!

Will run the Hitachi test and post back!

    thx

Okay so I just diagnosed my HDD using the Drive Fitness Test that u linked to and I also went a head and used the windows error checking aka check disk (right-click C: drive > Tools).

Both diagnostic tools found no errors... "Disposition Code = 0x00"

I've also managed to make a small video using my mobile phone to show what happens when I put my Original Windows XP Pro CD in and reboot.
    http://alhaffar.com/bhaffar/MOV00001.3gp

format: 3gp (viewable on vlc medai player: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/)
    size:1.02mb
    length: 1min

at the end of the video i get this blue screen error message:

    cheers!
