I just bought TravelMate 8005LMI. I feel sluggish performance when I use the notebook on batteries (not connected to Mains).
Investigating the cause, I checked the processor speed (by looking into the General Tab under System properties of My Computer); I noticed the speed of the processor is around 986 MHz (sometime even less) when running on batteries.
I did the same while the notebook is running on the Mains; the processor speed is 1.97 GHz.
I tried to go to various utilities that came with the notebook (i.e. Notebook Manager), and even the BIOS, but could not find anything that let me control Processor and Speed and performance.
I used to own Toshiba Satellite which had SpeedStep Technology which allowed Controlling Processor Speed regardless of Battery Condition, or relate processor speed to user defined power scheme.
Is there anything similar in Acer?

It looks like that you want the CPU to always perform at maximum capability.. GO to:
Control Panel > Power Options > Power Schemes > "Always On"
Other options you can select as per your liking..
I have given a more complete description at : http://www.notebookreview.com/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=8606
Let me know if this solves your problem...

Thanks ashugarg for your suggestion and help. I went through your suggestion and did:
Control Panel > Power Options > Power Schemes > "Always On" as advised by you, and then checked the processor speed and it showed 1.97 GHz []
But still when I open/close a file or a folder and/or expand the Icon tray on the taskbar at screen bottum, it feels sluggish than when the PC is connected to Mains.
The Power Scheme is a bit mis-leading as it does not show processor power (Unlike Toshiba).[]
I will play around with this option and see how chnaging the settings will effect the processor speed. [?]
Thanks again for your kind help.

The reason your TM feels sluggish on battery (even when the cpu is set at a higher speed) is due to the powerplay feature on the mobility radeon gfx card. It drops to less than a quarter speed on battery which makes opening windows and general navigating feel sluggish as it introduces delays etc...
What you want to do (at the expense of battery life of course) is go into display options, to the advanced tab of the ati panel and turn powerplay OFF for when on battery. Then you get the same performance as on mains...but you'll lose an hour on your battery life.
