Just to Get things Started, this is what I have found so far.

    Monster thread

All about Acer Aspire 5672 here. It is not very well sorted but there is tons of info.

    Extra Windows Keys and more!

Before you do anything with your new Acer check this out.

    ArticSilver 5

A guide on how to uprgare your thermal compund here. "lower temps!!"

Installing Heatsinks on chipset, heat issues

Dedicated to solving the heat issues, and some NHC stuff here.
On a sidenote, I would recommend leaving the plastic fan cover on to let let the fan do its job and keep the chipset cool. I found that if I removed the plastic it my touchpad got alot warmer and became annoying. A good idea would be to remove any of the dustcovers that have holes "mesh covers" in them to increase airflow, it seems that those mesh covers would only decrease airflow.

    (B) Lighting Issue Blurry
-OK guys, the lag of webcam is not just about the Low Light Boost. It is all about it's settings.
It's unbelievable, but that thing has many controls of a real camera (shutter speed, sensitivity, sharpness, white balance), combined with standard computer adjustment as brightness, contrast or gamma.
The Low Light Boost is simply slowing down the webcam because it forces it to the slowest possible shutter speed - 1/3s so the refresh rate of the cam can't be more than 3Hz! Just go into settings and driver settings and with standard photo knowledge, you can get bright picture without any lag. (turn off the Auto Gain Control, set speed at least 1/20, boost the gain and gamma and adjust sharpness, brightness and contrast as you like; auto white balance works just perfect). In low light you get quite a much of noise with acceptably visible picture, but in such condition at given sutter speed and without flash wouldn't even DSLR do any better.
It is still just a (poor) camera (no Star Trek gadget) = it needs plenty of light!
    Good luck.
Thanks, whoever posted this on the forum, I did not write this, but can't find who did.

ps. If you know where you can adjust these at send me a message as I can't seem to find it.

    (C) You can use the Logitech Image Studio software with our Acer OrbiCam, this allows you to do much more with the camera, you can adjust blurryness and much more. I highly recomend this software.

    Reformatting/Driver Intalls/Clean Install

    1. Reformat Your Acer Aspire AS5672WLMi-ATI booting from Windows XP Pro cd or home, Pro recomended, and install windows.
    2. I like to use the windows partition maker before I install windows to make a 20 gig partition for windows the rest for games and apps and stuff. This is your choice.
    3. After Installing XP

    Flashing Your Bios In Windows

Download the latest bios here don't worry if you do not have a europe laptop, a bios is a bios and it should work fine.
You will also need to download WinFlash Utility in order to flash your bios.
Now unpack and install the utility and its pretty much cake from there, since the program walks you through it, and remember always make a backup.

    Screen Cleaning

I use this to clean all of my lcd's screens, it works great, just make sure you spray it on a soft cloth first and not directly onto the lcd.

    Startup/Msconfig

Different things work for different people. Best bet is to go through your MSConfig, make a list of all the things that run on startup and then google each one (ie, type in "qttask.exe") and see if its safe to remove, or if its something you personally would use.

For reference, here are some of the things I have removed from startup

    ALCMTR
    Monitor
    hkmcd
    igfxpers
    igfxtray
    IMJPMIG
    Alaunch
    ImScInst
    NeroCheck
    TINTSETP (x2)
    qttask
    RTHDCPL
    SkyTel
    jusched
    Adobe Reader Speed Launch
    Microsoft Office

Course, this is what works for me. Some stuff you may well want to keep.
    Thanks sionyboy

    OverClocking

To overclock this notebook and almost any other computer try PowerStrip. I used it and it gave me some good results, but I do not know very much about overclocking so any insight would help.

SlipStream Updates and installs into Windows

Using slipstreaming can make application install and windows install that much easier in the future.
    Check this out.
    What is Slipstreaming?

    Vista RC1

I am happy to say that Vista RC1 runs very well on this laptop, besides small driver issues it is going to work out great. I played around with it for a while and found beta drivers for my sound and video and Vista installed my wifi and other stuff. It looks pretty sweet and will definitely take some getting used to, and the voice recognition software is really cool. Vista ,when released, should be a lot of fun on this laptop and I am looking forward to playing with it. Oh ya, and Vista gave me a 3.2 for performance, which I still don't really understand.

Try installing the updated Realtek Soundrivers from Realteks site here: Realtek HD Audio Drivers R1.46 or check out this thread.

    Free AntiVirus
I would recomend this antivirus here to anyone wanting a free, good working, low resource, non symantec = sucks antivirus.

    DVD Burning/Ripping Software

For help on chosing a program go here.
I use DVDFab, which works great on this laptop and every other system I have tried. This software has been tested on both types of dvd drives that come with this laptop and works great, it burns and rips dvd's alot faster than dvd shrink.

    Bluetooth Mice and Headphones

    Problem

I'm sure alot of 5672 users have experienced several problems with BT devices, namely mice and headphones. The most common issues with BT mice are connection drops and lag issues. As for BT headphones, well they simply don't work. The problem is not your hardware, it is your software.

Now I won't pretend to be an expert on the subject, which is why I highly recommend you read up on it here.

In a nutshell, the microsoft stacks on your 5672 are crap. Several BT services are buggy or simply do not work with this stack.

    Solution

Obviously, you need to install another stack. The stack you want is called WIDCOMM. Now there are many versions of WIDCOMM stacks out there. I would recommend going with the most recent (atm, v5.1.0.XXXX). Why ? First, it's A2DP compatible, which means it supports BT headphones. Second, they work great with BT mice. I currently have 5.1.0.1100 installed on my 5672 and I can confirm my Logitech V270 mouse and BlueAnt X5 headphone are working flawlessly, no connection drops, no lag. You may also try the 5.1.0.1700 and 5.1.0.2100 versions, which will probably work too.

Before continuing make sure to uninstall any BT mouse software you may have installed. For example, you must remove SetPoint for Logitech mice. Also, you must manually remove the Microsoft bluetooth stacks in your device manager under Bluetooth Devices. I believe there is a tutorial somewhere in the GMS-Forum .. if someone finds it, please let me know.

The WIDCOMM stacks are available @ GMS-Forum. Here is a link to the 5.1.0.1100 stack I am currently using: Widcomm.Bluetooth.Software.Drivers.5.1.0.1100.

If you're having problems installing these stacks, check out the replies in release threads, you should find some solutions there.

    Conflicts

Now there are a few drawbacks to these WIDCOMM stacks. One issue I found is incompatibility with ActiveSync. ActiveSync is a Microsoft program which allows you to sync your PDA via Windows. It also offers users to sync via bluetooth, which is an awesome feature for the 5672

As you may have guessed, ActiveSync isn't too happy when you remove the Microsoft stack. To get your PDA syncing with WIDCOMM, you need to make a few ajustments. After weeks of searching, I found this excellent post by benots4 over at aximsite. You can find his foolproof step-by-step guide here: ActiveSync over Bluetooth.

One more small note: Do not install the Logitech SetPoint software with the WICOMM stacks. I haven't been able to get SetPoint working with these WIDCOMM stacks. If anyone finds a solution, please let me know.

Well I think that about covers it. This is by no means a complete guide, so if you have any specific questions or issues, you can PM me or post in the forums mentionned above. Just don't post in this thread .. We want to keep it as clean as possible
    Thanks Mr.Pigeon

    Dual-Core Gaming Troubles?

If you have problems with certain older games, it is most likely the dual cores causing confusion, this was the case for Rainbow Six : RavenShield, so try this program. It will allow you to disable one core. Thanks Gabe

    Vista 32bit Build 6000 Final

I have been testing out Vista and here is what I got so far:

Here is the deal, ok so bluetooth, wifi, and the ethernet drivers auto install with Vista and work great. The ATI beta drivers work great but may cause you computer to go blank at login and I tested it, it is the drivers not the software. So in order to fix that you just need to set up autologon so you dont have to enter a password or press the standy by button let it go to sleep then wake it up and bamo! you can log back in. SO far Vista has been running great and very stable, I have been able to play all of my Steam games witout any issues, and they have been running even better than XP.

UPDATE: The latest video drivers fix the login problem!

    Drivers:

    CHIPSET: Intel Chipset Here
VIDEO CARD: ATI x1600 Beta Drivers Here
    SOUNDCARD: REALTEK HD Here
    TOUCHPAD: Touchpad Drivers Here
CARD READER 5 in 1 Card Reader Here

ps. I may have forgotten things that I fixed so let me know if you have questions.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hope this helps as it is all I have time for now, I will add more later, please try and keep this post more informative and less question filled. Also let me know if I anything I said is wrong or mispelled.
    Thanks!

I found that using the Omega drivers I got a score of about 500 point higher on 3dMark05, I will see if I can find my save score sheets. With overclocking I got about 200 more, which isn’t a ton so I left it unoverclocked "stock". But the Omega drivers have worked great for me and I play a lot of games, and with results like 500 ish points, why not? They also come with programs to make overclocking and such easier, it doesn’t hurt to look into it.

    Hope this helps, later

Ok quick before I leave the office, I found my docs, here are the 3dmark 05 scores
    Base Acer Drivers = 2525 3DMarks
    Omega Drivers = 2757 3DMarks
    Overclocked Omeag Drivers = 3006 3DMarks

Ok so maybe I was off on what I said before, but there are the numbers, and if you want the whole excel sheet and know somewhere I can host them, let me know.

ok thanks JohnnyT i appreciate it. ill install the omega drivers right away.
and im dling 3dmark 05 and 06 to test it out and compare my scores.

    ok for 3dmark05 i got
    base drivers: 2538
    With Omega Drivers:2537
i dont see a difference in scores.
and can you overclock it using the omega drivers? if so and how?

I used PowerStrip . I don't remember what values I used but you can just mess around and see what you like. And I don't know why your scores aren't any different, mine changed a good amount, and I made sure to run them with everything the same in the background.

please go google your question, this is more suited elsewhere and not in this thread.

    http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=what+is+slipstreaming&btnG=Google+Search

    <rant>
    Ok small rant time

Ok people i'm SORRY but seriously if you have a question, don't know it, throw it into google! Good lord it takes 2 seconds and usually answers your question!   I've been seeing more and more of this on the fourms lately.

Now go read up on your question, sorry it came out harsh but this is not the place to ask this question! This thread should be a REFRENCES ONLY and not a "oh I had a question about _______ , what is it or how do I do it". Just PLEASE do us the favor and googl it first! Or even search it on the fourms, it saves us time and headaches. The more questions you ask here without searching thoe more ambigious and complex this thread will become and the harder to find and answer questions. I'm all for helping people witht their computer questions and that is why I (and everyone else) is here. Just think before you post and try to find it yourself! This removes the posts on double questions, and things that might be listed in the faq's already.

Sorry, I had already googled the topic and could not find out how it was related to the ACER 5672. Did find a lot of stuff on making customized Windows CDs, which seems to be what the slipstreaming is for, but I am not sure. Just wanted to understand the topic better. I am pretty sure that I am not the only one who would be confused by this as it was the only topic without a detailed explanation and moreso, because googling the topic seems to show no relationship to this notebook or others. Maybe I am just googling the wrong thing.

If you can not add anything constructive to this post please do not continue to argue. Slipstreaming is not brand new and has been around for a long time. It is not specific to this laptop just as windows xp is not specific to this laptop. Slipstreaming can make things a lot easier, but it can only make things easier if you do some research and understand it. If you take the time to do it correctly it will greatly improve things such as recovery and more.

Not that your post was ecspecially contructive, but how about I add some contructive criticism:

    1. If you are going to start a thread about How To's for the Acer Aspire 5672, do not include a mysterious topic with no explanatory material, implying that it has something of value for the 5672 when in fact it has nothing to do with the 5672. It's okay, we all make mistakes.

    2. Do not criticize everyone for asking questions about the subject matter. Ecspecially when it points out a flaw in your post which made things more confusing to the reader. This discussion adds "constructive" value to the thread because other readers interested in this laptop will see it and realize that slipstreaming actually has nothing to do with this laptop and they will not waste their time Googling the topic and learning all about slipstreaming. Something they never wanted to know about in the first place because they were interested in How-Tos for the Aspire 5672

I will not be editing my post, I feel that anyone should learn as much as they can about anything relative to computers if they are to own a computer. If someone is offering you knowledge that you are not familiar with then do some research and maybe in the future you can offer help to others. If you do some research maybe you will learn something, and who knows maybe solve your own problems. Please do not take up anymore time bantering about such a stupid thing as slipstreaming, some people love it some "you" do not. If you would spend as much time looking things up and learning from what the internet has to offer as you do wasting space on this forum you wouldn't need to be here. So unless you know something about this laptop, or anything that can help, or would like to thank me for putting some effort into this forum and making your life easier. Please do not continue to post here.
    Thank you

JohnnyT provided this thread as a SERVICE, out of his good will. Simply put, if you don't like this thread, don't read it.

Personally, I feel that including information on Slipstreaming into a HOWTO thread is helpful. Not all of use are happy with the bloatware that Laptop makers provide when you get your PCs, yet we don't want to waste the install time putting drivers, updates, etc. on. Slipstreaming is the way that it's done.

Don't fault JohnnyT because you can't see it's usefulness in something that he took time to post. It takes a lot of work to put a thread together like that, and only 30 seconds to stink it up w/ a Troll.

I said I was sorry. It was a sincere apology. what more do you want?

With all do respect. This is a forum. It is made for discussion. There is nothing wrong with asking a question.

I was abused for asking a very succint question and lectured on how I need to use Google eventhough I had already done that. The slipstreaming topic was confusing to somebody who is interested in the 5672 but has never heard of slipstreaming. If you think that makes me stupid, that is fine. But be kind enough to keep that opinion to yourself.

Stop treating people like they are stupid. If you do not want to answer the question, then just ignore it.

Well, I had try overclocking the GPU and i think ATI Tool will be better than PowerStrip. PowerStrip will have problem when you try to raise the memory clock above 410. The version of ATI Tool that will work is "ATITool_0.25b14" and no other. The author of the software is trying to make it work better with the ATI 1XXX series but other version doesn't work with mobile ATI 1XXX. With that said, "ATITool_0.25b14" is not perfect for overclocking but it does do the job, without voltage tweaking etc. (don't try the ATITool beta15 or pre beta 16, those are more for desktop card :( )

I'm using 510/463 for gaming (ATI x1600). 3Dmark06 gives a 1870 score, stock score is around 1280. I don't know bout you guys playing games on this laptop, I had visual stutter 80% of the time when it was at stock speed, but now no more and game runs good.

Try this http://www.acerpanam.com/synapse/fo...m/us&siteid=7293&words=all&keywords=&areaid=7 and about overclocking I will mess with it and see, I overclocked it accelerating both using powerstrip, the clock speed to 575mhz and memory speed to 445mhz. It seemed to work well but I think it could be pushed further, however don't take my word for it becasue I havent messed with this in a while, so let me know what you think and I will test it when I get a chance.

Does anyone know if Acer is planing on updating the ATi drivers anytime soon? HL2 Episode One still freezes up whenever HDR Bloom is on.

Also is there a direct link to the new mobility drivers from ATi itself? The stupid verification software they have up on their site won't let me download the Cat 6.9 drivers.

Omega drivers are notorious for causing x1600 issues, google it and youll see alot of people had issues with thier mobile x1600. I actually lost almost 200 3dmarks going from the standard acer drivers to the omega ones, and thats after trying to install and config 3 times. Try using the catalyst from here they have improved the 3dmark score well.

Does anybody know if its possible to stop the graphics card from using system memory. I have the 5672 with the x1600 and 128 dedicated memory but 512 hyper memory. is it possible for the card to just use its own memory and NOT use system memory?

I can't get eRecovery to work!!!!

Thing is I live in Brazil and I imported the notebook from the USA. When I started it the first time the eRecovery did not start (probably it was already started previously). It's very complicated to try and contact the store where I bought it because it took 3 weeks for the notebook to arrive, I can't wait more 3 weeks. They willl ask me to send the computer back there. So I need another way of solving this...... Any ideas???

Hey guys. I've got a few Bluetooth tips for everyone.

It also offers users to sync via bluetooth, which is an awesome feature for the 5672 :)

We want to keep it as clean as possible ;)

    Cheers !

    Hello everyone,
Just to let you guys know, the european 5672 bios will work fine with PanAm 5672's. Nice to see that they now have core 2 duo support. However all of you should know that when you flash to a euro bios, it changes the way your screen looks. WHen using the european drivers, it will look like there is 'snow' in shaded areas and normally smooth color gradiants. If you can't stand this, just download the american bios or restore from your bios backup. It will eliminate this snow effect.

If my brother approves, I will try the omegas this weekend. I,ve seen about 50/50 positive and negative reviews. Time to set a restore point. Thanks JohnnyT for bringing this up on your massive post. :) I have the Acer supplied drivers installed (8.241.0). Go figure, I dont see those listed under the american site or Euro site. My 3d mark 03 score with the stock drivers are 4829.
I would like to try the omega overclocking feature on the ram frequency. I,m just worried about the extra heat.
I hope to see more posts on this.
A dedicated thread to the Omega 6.9 that I started is here:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=82392
hope to see more post here and there :)
thanks again for this well thought out thread, and enjoy some rep points on me :) HAPPY GAMING
