In specific, how can the heatsink be removed off of the processor, or is the cpu is soldered on the motherboard? I have unscrewed the 3 screws holding the copper bar which holds down the cpu but it still wouldn't come off. Do I need to apply force to pull it off? If anyone has done this before, please help! Also if anyone has a service guide for the aspire 4720z that also would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Once the cpu is clear, then you have to pop it out of its socket. So yes it does need a little oomph to remove it, it doesn't just fall out.

Just buy a new one in June or July , it is better to change you computer up as often as possible than upgrading it.
Now, maybe Acer is the best buy since all Acers are so cheap with cheap build , but who cares?
I think it is smart to buy an cheap acer or a Toshiba and change it up as often as we can , never spend more than a grand on a laptop since new processors are cheaper and better always.
This is the reason why I avoided getting a current Penryn lappie, they are not really optimized for PEnryn any way.
Now , the T7250 or T7300 is the best cpu to buy considering the price /performance ratio. -
Thanks Adinu, I could not get the copper piece covering/blocking the CPU out without "breaking it" So the CPU is not in the clear

I just bought the laptop a month ago it turned out to be too slow for my taste, I really need a way to upgrade it.

One more thing, I wasn't able to get the plastic back cover off which partially covers the copper bar blocking the cpu, so I am not sure if the bar is connected elsewhere inside, under the cover. I also unscrewed all the screws on the back of the cover and in the battery bay but the cover does not come off, which seems to be a trend with this Acer.

have a read of the upgrade thread at the top of acer board and lets see if we can help.
we have done loads of research on upgrades and it would be nice to have a new project -
Thank you hoggie, I had read that thread, that is how I came across this website actually. Only problem is Acer forced the frc-tech website to remove all Acer service manuals from their website. In fact there are no longer any Acer service manuals online for my particular laptop. I even called them and asked them for the service manual, they had the indecency to deny that service manuals even existed, sigh... All I need is some directions to disassemble components in the box without breaking anything ;-) In specific for now, how to remove the cpu and heatsink. I may have more questions later. I know the aspire will take a socket p merom processor since there is plenty of literature about that online. I will probably get a t7500.
How can I upgrade the processor of the aspire 4720z?
