How do I resize or merge partitions on Acer Laptop

I have an Acr Aspire 5103WLMi laptop and the hard disk has 3 partitions namely a 7.81Gb hidden partition, a 52.14Gb NTFS C: partition and a 51.84Gb NTFS D: partition.

I would like to move 25Gb of disk space from C: to D: but the Windows disk management will not allow the D: partition to expand and when I reduce the C: partition I can only do so by 14Gb and that becomes unallocated space which can only be moved back into C:.

When I installed Partition Manager 8.5 the C: partition appeared as unformatted and I couldn't do anything wih that software even though it is suppoed to be for Windows Vista.

Can anyone tell me how to reduce C: by 25Gb and increase D: by 25Gb.

partition magic is a good program i always use it

 

I have the same problem as matrixmainframe, wanting to shuffle about 30 GB from the C: drive to D:. The periodic recovery files are taking lots of room on D: and I'd like to move some more space from C:.

I have Parition Magic 8, but it says the hard drive is "BAD". PM can't do anything with the drive, can't resize, none of the PM features will work on the harddrive.

Frustrating. And I tried booting the laptop from the CD. It boots and goes to some version of DOS but PM won't start from the CD.

also if you useing partion magic make sure you useing at leasted ver 8

if you have partion magic you can install run from windows install the pm 8 patchs to ver 8.0.2?

 

I had exactly the sme problem on my 5920 but I got round it. First make sure you create restore disks and backup any data you dont want to loose.

I had c: 70gig d: 70gig I wanted c:110G d:20G my c: showed as not formatted in partition manager and neither that nor vista could resize c:. I could shrink d: but do nothing wiht the space.

In partition manger I selected to format c: in NTFS it took about 30 seconds then c: appeared as formatted and the computer was still running, dont reboot at this point or it will die on you. I then shrunk d: to 20G and could then expand c: to 110G as it now appears formatted.

After this the computer will keep running untill you reboot then it dies. Once dead I ran the restore from the hidden partition and it reinstalled vista but with the partitions now split how I want them. After setup c: again appears as not formatted in partition manager but it dosnt matter as its now the right size.

You will loose all your data on C: but not the data on D: at least I didnt but I offer no garentees.

 

Regarding Partition Magic reporting my laptop drive as "bad" after it repaired an error it detected, I recently tried another partitioning software, Paragon Hard Disk Manager suite. It was able to see the partitions on the drive whereas Partition Magic reported the whole drive as "bad" even though the laptop ran just fine otherwise. In the end I was able to resize my drive partitions.

For non-free version I suggest Acronis Disk Director, but I can also recommend free option -- gparted.

Download live CD or USB version --> http://gparted-livecd.tuxfamily.org/

It has graphical interface and its pretty simple to use. I successfully used live CD with XP, w2k3 and vista computers for resizing/modifiing existing partitions.

i have ur same notebook 5920, but acer assistence (italian) said me i can't resize partition otherwise the recovery disks won't be able to work again... :-(
from what u wrote it seems they said something wrong...
can u confirm it?

i want to do the same thing but i want to put more on D: from C: but i dont want to risk loosing my data on C: i have no idea how to run the partition softwares and i dont wanna make a mistake on it. any ideas how i can get around this?

 

if anyone could help with the easiest answer to this without having to lose the data i would appreciate it

 

How about to use Magic ??

If your name are Harry Poter ... anything is possible.

If not , you will ask help from an expert in your location, and he will take the responsibility .

But even that way , to backup your data , its your responsibility .

Burning DVD's or getting an external USB hard drive , its your's choice to make.

I was thinking of using GParted LiveUSB to at least nuke my Arcade partition, and using Vista's partition manager to take up the blank space.
A little wary of destroying the recovery partition in the same way, especially when I don't need the extra 10GB.
...I'm just getting rid of Arcade Instant-On because of my sheer hatred of it, and its habit of nuking my System Restore points.

 

Acronis Disk Director works fine on my laptop.

 

i may just use partition magic if i can figure out how to use it
