Could someone list the steps needed? It would help me also as I plan to format it too.

I think you will need to do a recovery disk if you didn't already have one.

formatting removes EVERYthing from the hard drive, it is not possible to do it through windows as it wipes out windows too, you would need to put the disk in and install windows again on the hard drive

And do you mean that you want to do a complete format, or only restart to what was installed when you got the computer.

See this first... Backup Acer recovery partition using eRecovery

Acer provide the Windows installation files on a seperate hard drive partition on your PC (not on a CD/DVD installation disk) so you need to make sure you have a backup of those before you go formating/deleting/partitioning or wiping anything.

Once you have done the recovery backup, then backup your important personal data (such as your documents, game save files, emails etc) that you need to keep so you can put them back onto a freshly installed system.

Then use eRecovery to reinstall Windows. (See this thread about Acer eRecovery)

If you think you need to... You can completely erase your hard disk using something like Darik's Boot And Nuke but you will lose everything including the means to reinstall Windows, unless you created a backup reinstall disk from the recovery partition! ;)

I would imagine your hard drive is partitioned into 2 visible drives, that would be drive C and drive D. But what you don't see are 2 more partitions, these are needed(that why they are hidden)to do a complete factory restore to the settings when you had your laptop and 1st started it.
On my previous laptop, I merged all the partitions and completely reformatted it, I must tell you that doing this will completely wipe your hard drive and you will not be able to do a 'factory restore' in the future.

I would suggest doing a factory reset, but to do this you will need to use E-recovery to make restore disks 1st. You can, however, also do this by pressing ALT + F10 just after the Acer logo when you boot your laptop.

To completely wipe your pc and merge your hard drive partitions takes alot of time, also you will need a copy of XP/Vista and all the drivers and software.

Most of this has been covered on this forum.
    Good luck.
