Hi i have an Acer Aspire 5672 with Pioneer DVDRW DVR-K06RS with firmware version 1.01. I have very low CD-R read and write speeds notably only being able to write at X4 instead of the X24 that the drive should be capable of. Obviously this takes CD burning times up from about 3 mins to 20mins so it is quite a significant difference. Having tried a few different media types I have yet to find blank CD-R's that burn at full speed or any higher than X4. I am aware some people have successfully upgraded their firmware on this drive and would really like to know step by step exactly what I have to do to upgrade the firmware so I can see if an upgrade solves my slow speeds. Any help on this subject will be greatly appreciated.
    Regards, Chris.

Laptop drives are typically OEM and do not get a lot of firmware support. Acer is probably your best shot. I don't know what brands you have tried, but Taiyo Yudens are widely considered to be the best blank discs, both CDs and DVDs. Verbatims are usually a good second choice. You might want to try some different software as well. Nero's trial version is the full version for the first 30 days. If it or another software works, you can get a inexpensive OEM version on eBay or Pricegrabber. Good Luck.

Maybe the RS stands for Reduced Speed. LOL

I searched the drive on Google and the first entry it came up was this

The guy that replied said to remove LightScribe. Maybe you can try that?

    Oh yeah nearly forgot,
Thanks for the tips Zaz i'll try some new software like you suggested.
Uncle G i've not got any software for lightscribe installed as it's obviously not a lightscribe drive. Not sure what that guy was on about. I checked in my common files anway and there's no lightscribe folder. Cheers for the reply on the matter.
SSX4life you said you've fixed the issue with this drive on your notebook with a firmware upgrade when I sent you a private message. Please can you tell me what I have to do in order to do the same? Thanks.

    SSX4life,
Why even bother posting this in this thread (that i have created to try and solve a problem) when you said you have solved the exact same problem yourself by updating your firmware? Why can't you just simply be helpful and tell me exactly what you did to fix the issue. Sorry it's just I find it extremely irritating that you bother posting what the problem is (" It is not just the media that is causing the problems, it is the burner that reads the same media @ 4x then 24x at times.") in this thread but don't bother actually posting the information i need to solve my problem. You told me you have fixed the issue with the exact same dvd drive so why can't you simply share with me what you did to fix it? To just post what you have and disappear when you told me in a private message you have solved this problem with a firmware update yet don't seem bothered in helping me do the same! Thanks a bunch

Jacks I have solved it by upgrading the firmware, however I as well have been in your situation and was asking around about a solution. I figured that since I have been busy you could read up on where I asked and see where people pointed me (and eventually pointed me in the right direction). Just to fill you in on the busy meter I am in my first week of classes this semester. Add that with working 30 hours a week and having a life I get busy.

I'll get to it this weekend, sorry I did not get back to you sooner but hld on ok? :) I figured by posting what I have done and where I went to solve it, it might have helped you out.

    ok jacks here ya go.

    Step 1. Go to http://tdb.rpc1.org/ and download the K06 firmware (v1.4 + v1.5)

Follow the directions on the site and flash to 1.04 and then flash to 1.05 (you can't just flash to 1.05)

Then restart your PC and try to burn a DVD with Nero 6 or 7. I am currently using Nero 6 and Ridata DVD's and they burn @ 4x and my CD's burn @ 24x.

    Hope this helps

Thankyou very much ssx. I have done as you said and flashed the drive to 1.04, then 1.05 and all was successful. My current brand of CD-R's still can only burn data at a max of X4 though bizarrely I burnt one CD at X24 then it went back to X4 again when i tried to do another disc as a test. I guess compatibiity isn't good with the discs I have at the moment. Can you please confirm are the CD-R's you use Ridata also? If so I think i'll buy some. Thanks a lot for helping me on this. :)

As stated previously yes. The K06RS is identical to the K06 models. They support both firmwares.

It's like saying a Honda Civic LX vs. a Honda Civic EX. Both are civics and both have the same basic components.

SSX4life you didn't answer my question. Are the CD-R's you use Ridata also? (Like the DVD's that you said are Ridata)

I think he said his burning Ridata dvds at 4x. But something else at 24x for cds.
If you want better speed I would recommend a more reputable company like Verbatim for DVDs cus the cheaper stuff may give you lower speeds and coasters.

Oh, here is a site to find the best medias and other good info for drives.

sorry for not reading your question fully.

    I burn DVD's with Fujifilm DVD-R (white surface) dvd's and Ridata -R 16x DVD's (the cheapest 100 packs on newegg.com). I get 4x on them :)

For cd's I use Verbatim for cd's and get 24x 95% of the time. :)
