How hot is TOO hot? (Ferrari)

Hey ya'll

I was playing Civ4 on my ferrari 4005 (awesome game) and I think it shut down due to heat (just the game, just dropped out to windows). I used to run the RMclock utility to undervolt the unit, but was having standby issues with that so went back to default system settings.

Anyway, from watching mobilemark's graph, the heat topped out at 79C (!!!!) and the fan was screaming like a banshee. Is that normal or perhaps did I get a funky unit? If other people don't see those kind of temperatures perhaps I will exchange it for a new one (got it from costco).

Seemed a little extreme, perhaps I will go back to undervolting and doing more fiddling so it doesnt have that standby problem..

 

That is very hot. What was running at 79 degrees, the CPU?

Make sure that nothing is blocking the fan, or there isn't too much dust in it. Canned air is a good way to get it out.

Have you thought about purchasing a cooling pad? I suggest one of the aluminum ones by Vantec. They are very good at whisking away heat. When I had my Acer, I noticed the heat drop by 10-15 degrees, and that was with a plastic pad!

 

Mine gets hot when gaming but never that hot. The fan will kick up to a good speed when it heats up but never screaming. I'd exchange it.

 

Yep it was the CPU running that hot, the vents were definitely unobstructed and it is still pretty new so there was no dust build up.

This was sitting on my lap on top of my sumdex sleeve, but the vent was never being obstructed or anything.

Still debating taking it back to costco to swap, I believe they give a 6 month period for that, which I am still well inside..

 

I'd try gaming on a desk or another flat surface - air needs to be circulating around under the notebook, not just the fan. If it keeps reoccuring, then get it exchanged.

Well, I just was playing this evening (Civ 4) on my coffee table, plenty of air circulation and the room is not particulary warm even.. I alt-tabbed out and mobilemeter was showing *85* degrees C. Crazy. I am seriously thinking about taking it back.. Really a shame because it *is* a great notebook. I don't think costco has them in the store so probably they would refund my money and then I could order it online again... But I dunno now, what if I get another one that runs that hot too? Hmm. Just idle the machine never seems to go below 40C, that definitely seems a little high.. The HDD never goes above 40 though, always hovering around the 36C range, which seems acceptable.

I don't know what I would go for that would run cooler than this one, although I caught myself having a look at the *gulp* M170 specs.. Too large though, I like the 15.4" screen more than the 17"..

Thanks for any input on the heat issues, it is my first laptop so I'm not really sure how hot they should be expected to run. I'm no stranger to hot ICs - I'm an electrical engineer so I know about heat dissipation and all that... Just suprised the things get so dang toasty sometimes!

 

I'd try to get it exchanged, and then if you keep having the same issue, get a refund and try another laptop, maybe an Asus Z70VA.

Your hard drive temperature is more than acceptable though, 36 degrees is very low.

Yeah i think I'll take it back this weekend. Not sure if I'll re-order another one or perhaps look around a bit, but whatever I get I'll try to buy from costco again. Limits my options a bit but their satisfaction thing is an excellent incentive to buy there!

I was checking out the specs on the turion, it seems that 90C is the rated maximum for the cpu, jeez. Cutting it pretty close there! Definitely not acceptable though, what is the point of having high end specs if you can't actually use them without burning up the laptop! I really hope it was just my laptop, and I'm guessing it is since no one else has been reporting the problems.. Excellent laptop otherwise!

 

I dunno man... those stats aren't too bad. I've run Counterstrike Source for hours on end at cpu temps around 75C and GPU temps of 90C with minimal problems... (lol actually i was running the GPU max overclocked at 91C for like 2hours before it finally said no, flipped out, and i decided to clock it down to normal to keep it happy). I dunno about other people...but i have NEVER EVER gone below 40C on my CPU even with my fans blowing at 100%, and my GPU has never dropped under 50C so i dunno what's all the hoofla. If you're having a issues i would suggest you check your ram...that's usually the first culprit. I didn't know over heating quit programs...i thought it only shutdown ur computer in a last ditch effort...not selectively close programs. Try using memtest to check your ram before you return it...

I dunno, this is my first laptop...but i thought they just naturally ran hotter than desktops...

 

Whoa! What processor/GPU/laptop are you using??? My zv6000 (which has a AMD Athlon 64 4000+ BTW) never, I mean NEVER goes above 65 degree's Centigrade (I maxed out the temp. when I played BF2, which is a pretty demanding game in IMO) My average running temp. is about 31-34 degrees, and that's with a modified desktop processor too. I would think that running a laptop at 90 degrees would damage internal components and fry the MOBO.

 

I installed the newer (1.8) version of RMClock, it seems to have actual Turion support now so I'm hoping it won't have any standby issues. I went back to the same settings I had figured out before (.9V for 4x, 1.2v for 10x multipliers) and it knocks the temperature back by ~20C under load. Big diff!

I still get Civ 4 crashing like mad but.. I think that is a Civ4/ATI issue and not necessarily to do with the ferrari + heat.

I'll be keeping an eye on the temperature this thing runs at though, I still have a few more months before I can't return it anymore so I'd like to give it the best trial possible!

 

85C is not too hot (neither is 79C)
If the system was shutting down from overheating, it wouldn't have kicked you out of the game and into Windows, it would have just powered off and halted all systems...
this is obviously not what is happening, so I would be looking at something else tht caused that issue

 

Yah, I think it was civ 4 that is buggy since it has some crash issues on my desktop even..
