Just been looking through the service guide (thanks dualview), and the extra SATA connector is being refered to as the SSD board, leading me to assume that not only is that a fully functioning SATA port, but there are also SSDs available that fit in that space and connector.

    Edit:

This is the 32gb SSD used in the 3810 series (Samsung mmcre32gsmpp-mva):

    Hi all,

I have installed Option GTM382 and the driver from ACER into my 3810TG. However each time I tried to connect via the 3G Manager, I kept encountering this error "0x84000009".

    Any clue?

In addition to the Samsung half-slim SSD, and the vapourware Toshiba half-slim SSD, TDK has just announced their own half-slim SSD: the TDK SHG2A.

    http://www.tdk.com/pdf/pr_rs2_ssd_e_r100330.pdf

If anybody has access to one of these half-slim SSD devices, could they test them inside an Acer 3810.

    Hey there-

I ordered my 3810 and have it arriving Tuesday (I know, the 3820s are around corner, but I wasn't liking the reviews I was reading regarding its battery life). I'm looking to get an SSD added. Does anyone know the dimensions of the space next to the SSD connector?

The 1.8 inch drives all look to use micro SATA connectors. This is the drive I'm looking at:

    Newegg.com - PQI S518 6518-032GR1002 1.8" 32GB Micro-SATA Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

I suppose I might order it and if it doesn't work plunk it in my main box, but if anyone knows about how big the space we're talking about it would really help. There are several drives in that size, including an Intel 80gb model.

I am trying to look up a schematic of the 3810T motherboard. Anybody know an online source? We have located a backlit keyboard on ebay for the 3810T. Does anybody have this model with the backlit board? Has anyone on this thread retrofitted one? And ... the real point of this question ... does anybody know where the power coupling is on the motherboard for the power wire on the backlit keyboard?

Any help you can give would be greaty appreaciated.

    Bronsky

@Dualview - do you think the service manual will have what I'm looking for or is there somemore comprehensive like a shop manual? Would you be so kind as to send me a link?

If you need a service manual, just Google Acer 3810 Service Manual . There are a ton of sites, including Acer, that host it.

All I get are specifications manuals or quick start guides. I want a shop manual with schematics. I am looking for something very specific (backlit keyboard power coupling on the motherboard - anybody know this?). Anybody know where I can get access to a shop manual, service manual or motherboard schematic on-line? A link if posible.

So it looks like a 1.8" drive is too long, based on re-reading this thread. However, I have an idea. What if you removed it from the case and turned it on its side?

The stock connector won't reach. However, looking at these teardown photos of the Dell Adamo:

Dell Adamo Teardown - Page 2 - iFixit
Cracking Open the Dell Adamo | TechRepublic Photo Gallery

It appears to use a longer version of a similar cable (and it is hardwired on the SATA connector end). So with a 6-8" lead, you could put the drive just about anywhere you had room. However, I can't find anyone who sells that cable... yet. Part number is DD0SS5TH200.

    Hi,
I'm trying to pull out the 2nd sata connector so that I can attach any external sata device, like external hd or cdrom, as I already have ssd instead of hdd.
    I'm don't know if it's better:
    - to get a longer flat cable like one discussed in the previous post, and fix the connector on the chassis if there is room for it, infact there are plastic connectors that can't be cutted (see pic)

    BEFORE:
    http://img213.imageshack.us/i/beforecv.jpg/

AFTER MOD (sorry I used ms paint):
    http://img709.imageshack.us/i/afterrk.jpg/

    - find a cable to attach to the sata connector with another sata connector on the other hand. For example an esata like written in the first post of this thread, or preferably for my needs a normal sata with or without power.

Any idea If there is a mini sata male to sata male (like mobo connectors) connector/cable ?? Any experience which method is better?

Anybody got any more news on half slim SSDs? I'm still on the look out for one and I can't see anything for sale here in the UK, nor in the US. The only place I've seen them is in Turkey, a company called BigBoySSD seems to rebrand the Samsung ones.

I don't know how many of you still read this thread, but I thought you might be interested that I've ordered a Kingston SSDNow V-Series 30GB for my 3810TZ. Why am I posting that, you might ask, well if you'd take a moment to read this thread, you'll see that inside it is a small SSD which should fit in the dedicated SSD space.

I'll report back when it arrives.

And I can now guarantee that my 3810TZ came with a non-slim sata connector, and that the Kingston SSDNow V-Series 30GB SSD does in fact fit perfectly in the slot.

It is clear that this connector is not the remnants of the optical drive connectivity on larger models, it is in fact designed to take this size (half-1.8") SSD.

    Hope this helps you all!

    Hi,

interesting the last two posts. But to make sure that I understand it correctly, where exactly does the SSD you mentioned fit into the 3810?? Cause from what I see on the PIC it is NOT the HDD slot or am I wrong??
And which model you you exactly have w/wo bluetooth, which HDD built-in??
Cause my built-in HDD just died and I want a more save option for the future but not loosing on the large space for movies etc. So I am also looking for getting a SSD somewhere easy to work in the 3810 but I though I would have to replace the ooriginal HDD (though it will waste half of the space) and use an external HDD.
And: How to open the whole Chassis?? But for that gonna look for the Service Manual.
    Cheers

Correct, there's an SSD space inside the laptop between the SD card slot and the 2 USB ports. Although bare in mind you won't be able to fit any old hard disk in there, it's a funny size (half 1.8") and so you need to buy an SSD for it.

It IS from what Ive read also doable with the 3810 no??
And regarding higher capacities, I wonder whether this SSD would also fit:
    Kingston SSDNow V-Series 64GB 2.5" SATA-II
cause my Windo3ws Partition won't really fit on 30GB ;-(

AND: how doesd it work with the cable and what cables does one need to buy (Power/SATA)??

The ongoing FAN Problem of the 3810 - finally solved??

Hi, this is just to document two different approaches to solve the Fan Noise problem of the 3810 that I have found these days and would like to share with fellow 3810t owners:

Since Bios 1.17, the noise has been ways too high (for my personal taste) and all Bios upgrades did not solve this issue.
However, the last Bios 1.28 seems to be needed in order to solve the switchable GPU power consumption bug.

So in another forum, there is a software solution to switch the fan of until a user-defined threshold temperature:
    Lüfterkontrolle 5235 / 5635 (z/g/zg): Testing - Seite 86 - Acer-Userforum.de

Then, just today, I finally stumbled over a MODDED Bios version for the 3810 ver 1.28 which on top of giviner you the additional options stated otherwie, significantly increases the threshold for the different fan speeds.
You can download the BIOS from here:
    BIOS_Acer_3810_1.28_patch.rar ? RGhost ? file sharing

After first going the software way, now I use this BIOS and it works great! Now even with Power supply connected, the fan hardly spins while the temp is aroung 50 degrees

(see here the original forum FAQ post: http://translate.google.de/translate?hl=de&sl=ru&u=http://forum.ixbt.com/post.cgi%3Fid%3Dannc:17:40205&ei=SLXvTML1CMjNhAfuxqDuDA&sa=X&oi=translate&ct=result&resnum=6&ved=0CEkQ7gEwBQ&prev=/search%3Fq%3D3810%2Bbios%2Bad1ced.ru/%26hl%3Dde

So for those interested, you might give it a try!!
    Cheers, joemmi

I don't think it will work with the 64GB drive. Look at the pictures on the link below, the board inside is much larger on the 64GB version.

    and compare to 30GB version

thanks for this info, I am going to upgrade it with 30GB ssd ;)
Would it be in conflict with its other hard drive?
is there a way to select one as master and other as slave or just dedicate boot in bios?
    sorry - many questions

Once you've made the upgrade please post about the performance difference; subjective difference would be nice too.

I'm thinking about the possible upgrades to my 3810T (8GB of memory, faster main disk, additional SSD) and how to prioritize them.

The memory may come handy to use virtual machines (I'd like to use them for my work) but the hibernation time is already too long for my taste with 4GB and the default 320GB scorpio blue.

For the main drive I can think of a Momentus XT or a Scorpio Black: the difference to get the Scorpio Black + the SSDNow 30GB instead of the Momentus XT is relatively small but I'd really like to understand if it's worth the effort to open the machine and voiding the waranty.
It looks like going for an intel ready boost card is going to cost me the same or more than the difference existing bethween a regular 7200 rpm and an hybrid 7.2k drive.
It would also be interesting to understand if such investment makes any sense on a machine I paid 403 euro for.

    Thanks.

I just slapped the 30gb kingston drive in, and it really is a perfect fit.

You need to take the connector out, connect it to the ssd, then put them both back in together. This ensures the ssd sits properly (you'll understand this better when it comes to fitting it)

As for performance, boot times are very very quick!

I've noticed on this notebook the bios passes by very quickly, and so the time from pressing to button to windows desktop is very short.

Once the desktop shows, all of the startup apps load almost instantly.

Write speeds aren't much better than a standard disk. They are better, just not by very much. Read speeds are phenominal. Really quick.

Only using the drive for OS + Applications. Make sure you turn system restore off on the drive, and move the page file to another drive. I ended up with 18gb free space on the drive after a clean windows 7 install. Ample for my needs.

Very nice to hear... You wouldn't own a 3810T G by any chance? I wan't to do the SSD mod but I don't wan't to void my warranty just to find out that the 3810tg has a different layout and no room for a SSD :-/

I have the 3810Tg and tried to install the Sierra MC875 or Sierra MC8781 with no luck whatsoever.

I have a fresh install of Win7 so I don't have the 'launcher' and can't find it anywhere. Win7 Pro x64 doesn't see either card and when I press the WiFi button it only turns on/off the Wifi card.

    Any help appreciated.

update: Got the launcher and it only shows WiFi icon on/off.
Maybe both the WWAN cards are duff or some setting isn't turned on in the BIOS ? Or some power setting switch on the motherboard ?

At the end I could not resist and ordered the whole batch: MomentusXT 500GB, Kingston's 30GB SSD and 8GB of ram.
I can't wait to get them!

    Edit:
A side question on performance: does anyone know how to make the built in GE lan run a bit over the 67mbit/sec sustained that I'm getting currently?
I've tried another notebook (dell latitude 630) with the same source system and it gets from 70 to 140 mbit/sec.

    Update:
The momentus is in; used Acronis Trueimage 2010 to clone the old one into the new one and it worked great.
Speed seems improved quite a bit (one week of use now)
8GB in: I have to install 64bit OS, at the moment I'm using the upper 4GB as ramdisk on vista 32bit. I'll wait till I can put in the SSD.
SSD: no time to dismantle the notebook and put it in yet
Adata class6 SDHC: very low performance. Lower than the momentus according to Atto IO benchmark, likely useless for readyboost.

    Update2:
SSD installed; opening the notebook is really easy as was said at the beginning of this thread.
So far I've installed only Opensuse 11.2 on the SSD. Silence is great :) and full usage of the memory too.

Update3: W7 HP 64bit installed without a problem on the SSD.
I disabled ibernation to save space on the SSD (6GB saved)
The Hybrid drive makes strange noises from time to time (like losing power suddenly and getting it back) and the performance of the added flash memory is not really noticeable in my experience (Vista 32bit)
I'm going to move Linux out of the SSD as with 7 64bit the need for linux decreased.

This is a reply to Vihsadas. I've heard good things about both the Samsung 470s and the OCZ Vertex 2 SSDs. Check out the reports at Best SSD

I'm not seeing the part of the Anandtech article where Anand puts down Samsung branded SSDs. Vihsadas' link is broken, but I tried to search the site, and am just not drawing the same conclusions.

i`ve also experienced this problem-my acer 3810 didn`t see the card.
you need just to tape 20 pin in your card and it`ll work.

Hi guys, own a timeline 3810t as well and was interested in the additional mini pcie slot and sata port. Apparently the type of SSD used are called half-slim ssd (can do a google search). However its not widely available in market yet. Just sent in a mail to made-in-china to get more info and stats wrt their 64gb half slim ssd. Will get back soon.

A few inquiries: As my laptop carry GS45 chipset (GMA 4500MHD), what is the benefit of adding a broadcom hd decoder? and does anyone know the mini pci-e version that this chipset supports? Thinking of adding a usb 3.0 mpcie card. SATA seems to be version 2 i.e. 300MBps though it is stated as SATA150 in the repair manual.
    Thanks!

Windows 7 built in drivers for the wired network card are way better than the ones of Vista.
Now i can get 200mbit out of the gbit nic gettin files from the very same source that provided on 67mbit with Vista.
I'm very happy and strongly suggest the installation of W7 to people that has not done that yet. I got for 123$ a 3 system upgrade; not too big of an investment.

Tried uninstalling powersmart and launch manager - no luck.
I'm using modified bios maybe there is something wrong?
    Using acer 3810tg

    EDIT: pin20 fix worked

I've recently installed an Option 382 WWAN card.
The Acer 3G application installed fine and recognized the card.
I have a single U-shaped antenna (one of those "printed" on a thin PCB) at the moment
Is installed under the card itself and the signal reception is quite low compared to an USB stick.
I've seen a few other model of antennae but I wonder where to place them.
Adding a second U-shaped antenna will make my signal reception any better?
If I should go with a different type of antenna I'd appreciate suggestions about model and, most important, location.
