I have had to fdisk my laptop because of various viruses it had and a keylogger. i want to put a copy of Xp on the machine but when i try it says it cant find any hard drives, it originally had vista home on it but i got no disks with it so i can't reinstall that either? The message i get when trying to install Xp is: "Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer. Make sure any hard disk drives are powered on and properly connected to your computer, and that any disk-related hardware configuration is correct. This may involve running a manufacturer-supplied diagnostic or setup program.

Probably because your XP lacks the SATA drivers. You can slipstream the SATA drivers into the XP using nLite. Alternatively, service pack three works as well.

Tried service pack 3 - did not work, but it was not a genuine copy.

I've done it myself many times and it's never failed me. Perhaps you should get a genuine copy.
