I really am leaning on getting an Acer laptop, not sure what model yet, probablly wait until the second round of Duo Core laptops comes to allow bugs to be fixed. The only thing that has me scared is not having the ability to have my own OS disk. I found this a problem with most new builds, even Dell. I want my OS disk. Is there a way to get this from Acer?

No one seems to know? I am sure this is a common problem, wanting to do a fresh reinstall of Windows XP? Maybe I am wrong.

My 8204 came with NO discs - it had me burn a "recovery disc' and an "applications and drivers" disc. I can reinstall WinXP on my 8204, but can't install it on anything else.

Two friends, one with a Dell laptop, and another with a Gateway laptop got OEM discs which can reinstall WinXP ONLY on their respective machines - no WinXP discs separately.

I'm sure this is done with M$'s blessings, and rewarded with a cheaper cost/unit than they'd charge with a full install WinXP disc, which users could install again and again. More $$$ for Uncle Bill!

    Hi,
I think i am looking at the same issue as yourseld. However i have ust got y new laptop delivered at the weekend.

I have been having a goodl ook at reinstalling afresh.

On the C: drive their is an i386 folder, from what i can ascertain this is the full source directory for win XP, it has both the setup files (1bit and 32bit). i even tried running the 32 bit file from windows and it through up the Win xp installation wizard.

I am going to try copying the directory to a CD and try reinstalling from there and using the drivers from the recovery DVD i made.

Fingers crossed this should give a clean install.
