Hi all,
I'm new to this forum, hope someone can help me a bit here. Seems to be a lot of experts on Acer here. The story:
2 months ago, i got a Aspire 4920G.
(Intel Core2Duo T5550 (1.83GHz-667-2mb)
ATI HD 2400XT -128Mb? i think
1Gb DDR2
250Gb HD)
Since i like playing games, i got this, cos the sales dude told me its really good for games. First thing i did was to get more ram, now i have 4Gb. It came with Linux, but i formatted and put XP32 instead.
Could only see 3Gb ram, and in ATI CCC i had only 256Mb of "hypermemory". After many bla bla's with Acer support in Thailand, i eventually installed Vista 32 and then 64. Now i "see" all 4 Gb, all good, and have 1919Mb of memory in CCC.
I now have a windows base score of 3.3.
However, im a bit dissapointed with the performance in games. About 2 years ago, i had a Travelmate with X700 /128mb graphics. I could play both Doom 3 and Quake 4 on that one too. But the graphics performance in my current comp is very much the same as in my old! I dont see much different at all.
Questions:
1. Is the 1919Mb of graphics mem just a hoax, or am i lagging cos of my 1,83Ghz processor?? What can i do to speed things up?
2. Whats the difference between T5500 and T5550?
3. Could i upgrade to a faster processor, if so which one?
Many thanks in advance,
Tom of Finland

I'm sorry, but the "sales dude" has grossly misinformed you. Your processor is fine, but the 2400XT is your problem.... Have you tried reinstalling drivers?
BTW: My old desktop X700 is as fast as my 8500GT(desktop) (similar to 2400XT). -
Thanks Tommo,
Ok crap... i just thought so. Is it possible to open the comp and replace the 2400XT with another card? Acer said "nooooo can nooot", but it can somehow be removed right??
And then the drivers. Im using a driver from 2007, found it on acers european support page. Its a mess too, i tried to get the driver for Service Pack 1 from that webpage, but it seems that driver is only for Vista32. So i still dont have SP1 for my Vista.
I think i should have opted for the 5920... reading great stuff about it here.
Thanks again..

The graphics card can be removed, but there's nothing to upgrade to.

So i guess the HD 2600 / 2600 XT wouldnt fit then. Is it cos of the motherboard?

1 total video memory 1944 mb means that since the HD2400XT in the Acer has 256mb(gddr2) of dedicated Vram , it borrows the rest from main Ram of your PC.
2 basically they are very similar spec wise, the improved version of the T5500 is the T5550.
3 yeah, it is easy to do it but that won't improve your Acer's gaming performance much since it is the GPU not the CPU.
And you can not upgrade your GPU especially in an Acer or any very consumer brand product.
That is the reason why I think everybody should spend a bit more on a decent GPU, it is more important than HD size or a fast CPU cause you can not easily upgrade it later , but ram, cPU or HD is very easy to upgrade later.
If you can sell it , sell it and get an ASUS F8SN or an Acer Aspire 5920G-832G32mn , they are the most powerful laptops you can get in BKK.
Being in BKK really limit your choices. -
XP would make the laptop seem much more responsive.... i know vista will never again boot up on this laptop of mine

Thanks guys... I'm looking at the acer singapore page now, the 6920 and 8920 are so nice.
I was thinking about going back to XP, even if i have only 3gb ram then, it might work better and faster than the Vista64. I had blue screen of death a few times with Vista.
So, anybody want to buy a nice 4920G? Hehe....its cheap now.
Tom -
I want to buy a 5920G 832Gbn.
I think XP makes your laptop a bit faster as my HP got a bit faster after I downgraded it without telling my bossy boss about it.
any way, it is not really important if yours have 3gb or 4gb when you use it under XP pro sp2.
and even under Vista P or U, it does not really matter , not always more is better in performance.
I think vista needs 2gb and any more than 2gb does not improve its performance at all, there are many tests on line to read if you are interested.
Finally, when you shop in BKK, never listen to these sells boys and girls , they do not know what they are talking about, in fact , shockingly, they do not even know which core2 duo is faster T5550 or T7500, kinda thing.
if you ask them what cpu is in it? they just tell you core2duo..........and you ask what C2D is it?
then they tell you they don't know it and you should not worry about what core 2 duo is in side...........
so just ignore them and reserch yourself and find a good deal yourself.
and you must know the right price for a laptop of your interest, without that , you will be ripped.
almost all prices here are negotiable.
if you know the right prices for models of your interest , you will get a good deal.
For 4920G832G 32mn(t8300, 2gb , vista premium , 320gb hd, ATI HD2400XT with 256mb dedicated vram, 4965agn,) you should not pay any more than 38000baht.
and for your particular model , the right price here should be around 28900baht.
hope this helps a bit.
PS.the cheapest shop in BKK is probably HWI (hardware house international)or mouse-computer group.
any way in BKK, you can not get western level of service or knowledge , in Singapore , a decent lappy is very very expensive.
and be careful many of ASUSs here are fake or stolen models.
I think Acers are safe. -
Tom i aam also using the same lap top as urs, i just bought it 5 months ago, and i would love to change the OS to XP, Vista is very slow,
Do u have a advice where can i get all the drivers for my lap top? -
Hiya,
Try support.acer-euro.com/drivers/
If u cant find there, why dont you search on yahoo for acer drivers download??
But im not sure that they have drivers for XP anymore, cos all new laps come with Linux or Vista. I had problems with Vista before too, then i installed a home edition Vista or what it was called, an easier version. That one worked well. Dont try the extreme or professional versions.
Anyway, the 4920G is a crap comp for me, hardly any new games can be played well on it. A comp that is good for internet, thats it.
Peace,
T
How to make 4920G faster? Have 4Gb ram!
