Ok folks here's the scoop ...

    1. I never use my Laptop anywhere on battery power i.e. 99% of the time AC is available and used. This of-course may change at some point in the future for a plethora of reasons.
    2. I fully discharge the battery then fully charge once every ~2 weeks since I purchased it a few months back.
    3. The battery is useful as a mini UPS.

Now the question is should I simply remove the battery and store it until such times as I'm required to be mobile in order to gain a longer overall lifespan of the battery? If so should it be retired for the time being fully dis-charged or charged?
Has technology (Lithium-Ion) changed such that this would be un-necessary as the battery is likely not to suffer from memory effect and last several years (let's say 3-ish) before it would need a replacement.

The reason I ask is Everest Ultimate edition 2006 output these details:

    Power Management Properties:
    Current Power Source: Battery
Battery Status: 88 % (High Level)
    Full Battery Lifetime: Unknown
Remaining Battery Lifetime: 11326 sec (3 hours, 8 min, 46 sec)

    Battery Properties:
    Device Name: GC86503SY90
    Manufacturer: SONY
    Unique ID: SONY GC86503SY90
    Battery Type: Rechargeable Li-Ion
    Designed Capacity: 44400 mWh
    Fully Charged Capacity: 42058 mWh
    Current Capacity: 37019 mWh (88 %)
    Voltage: 11829 mV
    Wear Level: 5 %
    Power State: Discharging
    Discharge Rate: 11733 mW

So as you can see it has a wear level of 5% after only ~2 months and has been fully discharged about 4 times (today will be the 5th time). Yeah, I know a bit anal but I'd like to extend the battery lifespan to the mximum.

    Thanks folks :)

    Here is the advise...

Modern battery charging systems baby batteries like you won't believe.

It should not make any difference if you leave the battery permanently in the laptop or not. Modern chargers "trickle charge" full batteries and constantly monitor battery temps, charging current etc. and basically as I said "baby the battery". All batteries (whether rechargeable or not) have a limited lifespan.

It makes no sense at all to remove a fully charged battery and store it in the hope that it will last longer than one that is permanently kept in the Notebook and kept fully charged by the charging circuitry.
