Hi all, greetings from SE Asia :) at long last, I've finally get a hold of Aspire 5920G, and boy the search was full of blood and tears... Well, not that dramatic actually, but it does involve a lot of sweat.

Anywho, I'm ecstatic about the notebook, 8600M GT, T7500, 250 GB HD, 2 GB of memory, etc, etc, everything was perfect for me... Except for one thing, the OS. So I got the Vista Home Premium, and I really don't like how slow it handles file transfers, and I don't know why, but installing applications from the office network took ages (installing Nero took roughly 20 minutes).

My colleagues suggested that I use my old Windows XP instead of the built in Vista Home. I didn't took their suggestion though because I felt that Vista is enough and I'm pretty sure Microsoft will fix it in the near future (well, they kill XP support, they surely focused the free resources somewhere).

Well, that's a short rant from me. Anywho, I gave the Vista one more chance and I would like to know some things...

Can I do a thorough clean up of the pre-installed items? I want to get rid of Microsoft Office, Norton Systemworks and basically everything except for the Acer empowerment apps. I didn't like those pre-installed oberon games. I know I can manually uninstall them from the program manager (add/remove programs) but I'm afraid that the apps will leave "footmarks" if you know what I mean.

I would think that a registry-editor would get rid of lots of "footprints" after manually uninstalling programs you don't want.

And doing a HD search using the program name to find any files/folders left behind.

I used the Windows uninstall app to remove everything unwanted right away, like Norton trial and MS Office trial. I don't think it can leave that many footprints. Just use a backtrack/uninstall program for all software you install afterwards.

If you want to a more thorough uninstall, try Revo Uninstaller.

For me, the built in uninstaller seemed to be enough. I uninstalled Norton and some other junk without problems. The system appears quite a bit faster afterwards.

Thanks guys for the information, I did a full clean install of the notebook using a retail Vista CD. I don't know if it's the clean install effect but somehow the system responded much much much faster, especially after I installed autopatcher (the last august update) and some minor tweaking. The problem with this clean install is that Acer didn't include the eRecovery program with the driver utility backup I made.

It's been 3 days, and finally I can get the system up and running... Although the frenetic hard disk access at the start of the Vista really nags me.

Don't worry... The frenetic hard drive access should be gone after a few days.
