Anybody know how to fit a replacement screen onto an Acer Aspire 5920? I've scanned areas of the Internet I never knew existed for some kind of service manual, but all I keep finding is manuals for old models. Nothing useful unfortunately. Can somebody please help?

I have the service manual for the 5920G model. I assume the replacement of the screen will be the same. PM your e-mail and I'll send it your way (4MB).

Okay guys, I'm in the middle of "Removing the keyboard and LCD Module" following the service manual and I am struggling to remove the power board cover (The plastic cover surrounding the power key between the keyboard and the LCD module) Do I just prise it off? It looks like I have already snapped off a clip, but I can not see how to release them any other way. It is one of the last obstacles before I can release the LCD module and then hopefully replace the screen.

    Edit...
SOLUTION: There were three screws securing the power board, which can be unscrewed from inside the machine once the battery has been removed. My machine obviously differs slightly from the service manual as there is no mention of these anywhere.

    Hi Jeff,
I got mine from an Ebay trader: laptopservicecenter
It was labelled "A+ NEW ACER ASPIRE 5920 15.4" WXGA GLOSSY LCD SCREEN". If you live in the USA you are sorted, otherwise you may need to check if importing LCD displays incurrs custom duty or tax.
The part number on my screen is:
    Model No: B154EW08

I'm not quite through replacing the screen yet but I have demolished (taken apart the laptop according to the service manual instructions) After a few more glasses of wine I will go ahead with the fittingof the screen and then hopefully building it all back together again...

    Thanks Andy,
The service manual (link provided in Wilko's post) describes the procedure in detail with photos - Except the small detail about the three screws securing the power board cover. ;) One more detail I might add is that removing the LCD bezel "carefully" is not an easy task either. Some of the clips will not give up easily. I nearly broke the bezel in two, and have lost half my fingernails in the process!

Egghead, since you have your laptop all apart anyway I have a quick question. Did your 5920 come with the Intel 4965 AG N or the 3945 ABG WiFi card? If it came with the AGN card, does your 5920 actually have 3 antenna connectors as well as 3 antennas in the LCD cover/assembly?

I ask because I have a 5920-6313 that only came with the 3945 ABG card that I want to upgrade to the AGN card, but wanted to know if and where I would have to add the 3rd antenna to get full MiMo/N functionality. Thanks.

Wilko, thanks a lot for the service manual link! Looks like it will come in really handy. :D

    Hi Avro,
I've closed it up now, but it's really easy to open up your machine for a quick look. See the Service Manual (page 53, chapter 3). Unscrew the nine screws holding the back panel - no need to remove the screws from the holes, just loosen them, because on my laptop they are held in place with a washer. Edit: Two of the screws on my laptop are covered with a glue on plastic cover which can be picked off and easily restuck on afterwards.

Once open, you can see your WiFi card up at the top left of the open area.
I have the Intel 3945 ABG card in mine. Without knowing much about the MiMo/N card I'm sure you can probably tuck the third antenna out of the main bottom compartment and feed it into the top LCD compartment, but without a specific place for it, I reckon you will probably just have to thread it around the same route as the existing antennae system. Whether that makes it less effective and not worth upgrading I wouldn't know. - Sorry.
(You can view the position of the wires in the service manual on page 60, and in some other photos in the chapters discussing LCD removal and disassembly)
Hope the info is useful though.
    Regards,
    Egghead

    Egghead,
Thanks for the quick reply. Yeah, I found those 2 middle screws covered by black plastic dots. I was wondering why the bottom panel wouldn't come off after I took the 7 screws out because I didn't realize there were 9 total.

Since you also have the 3945 ABG card, then you wouldn't have the 3 antennas. My main question was where does the 3rd antenna go behind the LCD. I went through that service manual and it doesn't show any pictures of where the antennas terminate behind the LCD. The closest I could see was the pictures of the wires for the dual mics behind the LCD and the "detach LCD cable from LCD" on page 67.

I did however find some part number listings for "LCD COVER ASSY W/ANTENNA 3 WIRE W/0.3M CCD" and "LCD COVER ASSY W/ANTENNA 2 WIRE W/0.3M CCD" so I guess that answers my question of whether the models with the AGN cards come with 3 antennas... they do. I just don't know where they go. I guess I'll have to open up the LCD cover assembly to see. Man... maybe I should just go buy a ExpressCard draft-N WiFi adapter and call it a day. Anyway, thanks for the help.

I have 4965 AGN with 3 pins, but only 2 are connected -- middle one has no wire attached.

    sponka,

Thanks for the info! That's kind of weird that it does not come with a 3rd wire/antenna. I assume that your 5920G came with the 4965AGN from the factory and was not an aftermarket upgrade? Do you connect to a 5GHz wireless-N router? If you do, do you sync at 270/300Mbps? I'm planning on buying a 4965AGN card for my 5920 and a Linksys WRT600N router and wanted to know if the 4965AGN (w/2 antennas) would connect at the full 270/300Mbps link speed.

It is not permitted to do such things on this site, however you can do a search for SG_AS5920G_BOOK.pdf which is hosted on many web hosting services like Rapidshare or MegaUpload etc

Not really CJ no, but thanks for the link as it is useful for Aspire 5100 owners and maybe some similar models. Quite an interesting site though with further links to some self repair web sites which some may find very useful...
