Hi Everybody =D!
I recently just bought Logitect Z-5500 5.1 Speakers,
and wanted to use on my Acer Aspire 5920G.
But it only work as a 2.1 speaker.
Do I need to buy any external or usb sound card/drive
to get the speaker to work fully?
If yes, can you guys recommend me any good products? thanks a bunch =D

Bump! I'd like some help with this as well. Thanks
-
ok what you need is an amp/sound system with optical in.
as your laptop has optical out.
you need a mini tosslink adapter which you insert into the headphone jack, the headphone hole/jack has two functions
1. is for headphones
2. is for SPDIF/ 5-1 or even 7-1 true surround
and the sound is amazing. if you have all the right equipment
all the best,

yes you have optical in on that unit.
and they look great, let us know how it all sounds -
may as well explain how it uses the same plug as the HEADPHONE jack, but MUST BE SET-UP using the REAL_TEK contol pannel icon (or the RED SPEAKER icon in the sys tray)... i'm sure the HELP FILE has info on DIGITAL OUTPUT
-
i found it by chance in the realtek control panel.
and it goes active as soon as you insert the mini tosslink adapter by defaultat 5-1.
i later found after a driver update from realtek that it now supports 7-1
the acer optical sound is not covered in any help file on my machine
and this question about 5-1/7-1 has come up a few times on here.
the realtek control panel is easy to use and very straight forward. -
I am currently using Logitech x-530 5.1 speakers, should it work? I'm gonna go buy a Toslink adaptor on the way from university today to try it out, hopefully it does.
-
I can't see any optical input
but still looking for a better spec sheet
ok from what i can dig-up on the net. you need an adapter optical-to-cable.
sorry but the Logitech x-530 is of the low end units from Logitech.
hope that helps

I can confirm, 5920G DOES have optical out and it should automatically switch on as soon as you plug a mini-TOSlink in. Check out this post:

Look at the pictures. -
Hi,
Got the same problem here. It is just that I have a different and older laptop - NEC VERSA M350. Does anyone knows whether the headphone jack of this laptop supports optical out?
This is because I'm trying to connect my laptop to the 5.1 (z5500) as well.
Another question, if i already connected the 6 ch direct of the speaker, can i still connect the digital optical? In order words, use both connection at the same time. Or I can only choose one of it?
Thanks in advance -
heres a link to the spec sheet i was looking at
http://www.cdfreaks.com/hardware/pr...0---Intel-Celeron-M370-512MB-40GB-AZERTY.html
when looking for outputs like 5-1 check your laptop has S/PDIF out this will 99% of the time mean you have optical -
I see. How about the S Video? Is it the same as the SPDIF?
-
SPDIF is a digtal sound. it used to use an old coxal type connection ,now most laptops with SPDIF use optical.. -
Ok, then i don't think my laptop has that optical out. Thanks for your help
-
Not sure if this applies to the 5920G, but my laptop can output two channels to each of the headphone, microphone, and line in jacks. Add 'em up, configured properly, and you have 5.1 output.

Hi guys! Can anybody who uses SPDIF output to connect the laptop with a receiver confirm that the surround/dolby logo comes on/lits up on the receiver with all sounds all only with mkv films that contain surround (AC3, DTS, dolby) sound? Dolby logo on my receiver lits up with everything, no matter if the sound is stereo like listening to MP3s on my laptop or if it's a movie with surround sound. What is the behaviour on your set up? Thanks!
-
this has two options DTS or 5-1. tried both and the 5-1 showed and the DTS,
also plugged in the S-Video.worked and souded great.
but would be better just to stick the dvd in the player lol.
but i tested it for you and i hope this helped

Thanks, hoggie. The thing I'm puzzled with is the fact that Dolby/DTS/surround sign on the receiver lights up even if I play ordinary mp3 from Winamp or a divx film. Obviously mp3 doesn't contain any surround sound just ordinary two-channel stereo but the light on the receiver still lights up. How about in your case? Thanks!
-
yes, just stuffed an old mpe disk in and the dts light was on..but i did notcie half the sound effects where not working with the mp3.
put 7110 in again and i had the full set of effects.
it must be seeing any compressed file as dts or 5-1.
so it must be how the software in the sound system see's the files or the input type.
EDIT: are you running xp or vista ?
in xp when i open sound properties in control panel i have speaker settings opition.
I have mine set to 5-1.
pop into control panel on your laptop and take a look at what output options you have. -
I have Vista and output is set to S/PDIF Digital Output (Optical).
The Dolby logo on my receiver is lit no matter what content I play - simple WAV file, internet radio, anything. -
on my system i get the optical option when i press the input selection button on the remote -
Yes, I select the input on the remote.

have fun
