Depends on the model. The higher end Ferrari or TravelMate 8200 offer better build quality, but on the lower end some probably aren't much better than Dells.

Ok from buying laptops over the last 9 years for use at work.
Toshiba laptops have outlived every other brand
Acer laptops were still good machines when we sold them but were out of date after only 3 years as disaster recovery machines

Sony laptops unless you buy the most expensive machines are shoddy and slow.

    NEC less said the better

    Samsung are very well built

    Compaq, ok but overpriced (HP)

We have just bought two travelmate 8204 machines for DR, these are built on carbon cases and are extremely sturdy

I myself have just bought an acer 5672wlmi and am extremely happy with the build.

acer laptops build quality is fine, easily as good as any other mainstream brand.

I have had no issues with my machine, other than they use fat32 for their installs!?!?!?? darn it.

Not being an Acer owner myself, I have looked at both the 8200 and the 5600 sereis and to be quite honest, wasn't to impressed. Component wise they offer everything under the sun....but it was the build quality that I didn't like.

    IMHO it just felt cheap.

*Edit* I don't believe that the 8204's case is built entirely of carbon fiber....just the lid.

Well, the 5672 is my first notebook. It seems well enough built. Everything fits together well. My only complaint is that the plastic case does flex on the open surfaces. I can feel it flex slightly when I rest my hands on it to type. But that's honestly a bit of a trivial complaint. It's not like the frame is flexing or anything.

    So far, no real complaints.

You're absolutely right. That's why I bought it. No one would, without being in the know, want to steal something that looks so ew. :p

    I have had a:

    Thinkpad
    Powerbook
    Dell Inspiron
    Acer

I would say the Dell was a tad shoddier. The Travelmate is **** molded plastic. Flexes alot, and creaks like a mofo; keys chipped, and the display bleads light.....some of the plastic parts were painted and the paint wore off.

My Thinkpad is rock solid, followed by the powerbook

You're kidding about the great build part right?

The keyboards on even the Ferrari's could not be made with any cheaper design or materials.

Having used my 5672 for 2 weeks now, I am quite happy with the build, it feels plenty solid enough for me, but then I am not very heavy handed with my kit.
We have just got some Travelmate 8204's at work for DR and they are more sturdy than my aspire.

as for the case flexing when typing , I have to press my palms pretty hard on the surface to get it to flex, and anyway for ergonomics sake, you shouldnt be resting your palms on the pads, raised wrists for typing will prevent many RSI's, I know its something I should do more! :)

Laptops unless you buy a toughbook, are all going to have their weakpoints.
I have no issues with mine, its simply the perfect machine to move from, after being a desktop user for years, something like this just a year ago would have cost in the region of uk£ 2500!!!

new technology, cheaper 90nm die's and laptops that more people can afford, the price of the acer is the main winner, beats equivalent Sony by uk£300!!!

    Good luck choosing :)

I agree with BOFH1971 about the 5672. So far so good . . . I've had it about a month and it's been great. Definitely a solid-enough machine for what I use it for. It's purely a desktop replacement for me. I have to say that over the last couple of years, anytime I've used notebooks I've hit the stupid touchpad while typing. Not this one. I don't know how Acer did it but it's perfectly placed!

That being said, I understood that there would be trade-offs on a machine with such a great feature-set at this price point. The case is mostly painted plastic (not a problem for me), the keys seem a little on the clicky side and the Backspace key makes an annoying squeak now and again, and around the touchpad - mine is slightly raised which doesn't seem right to me but maybe that was so they could fit in the Core Duo! ;)

My other concern about skimping is with airflow and overall case organization. I hope that the CPU and other components aren't getting too hot in there. Of course, my friend's Powerbook gets about as warm too and it's been working for a long while.

On the pro side, the screen is a big winner. I have read lots of complaints about screens bleeding light etc., but honestly I was watching a really nicely filmed movie the other day and the screen just looked fabulous. I'm glad that Acer didn't skimp on something so important.

I hope that I didn't make a mistake choosing based on components rather than solidity but I've heard more positives about Acer's reliability than negatives.

Hey Sibelius dont worry about the heat, basically the graphics processor and north bridge are all protected by heatpipe technology which feeds the heat to the fan (hence that nice heater at the right hand side) Of course heat rises and all the components will give off heat as the heatpipes are on the underside of the components (Imagine an updside down motherboard)

Thanks for that info BOFH1971. That'll make me sleep better! Even so, would you recommend a cooler pad at all? It gets pretty hot downunder during the summer months! (I guess I won't need to worry until about late November though...)

I've had my Acer Aspire 1694WLMi for a couple of months now and so far it has been great.

It even had a dead pixel but after a few days, it disapeared.

    I had an 1692.
When it worked it was perfect, but it stopped worked, so I suppose builting quality wasn´t good at all. My screen had problems from the beggining (some dead pixels).

well Acer do score very good grades in many PC hardware magazines. Your case is probably a rare one.

I hope ur laptop will be sorted out! is it still covered by warranty?

I don't think so. Here in greece there are a lot of acer users that have problems with them. I'm afraid that quality is lower than it should be, especially on aspire series. That's acceptable, cause they have low price. The unacceptable thing is the service, that has very low quality of service. Even the call center had problems...

Yes, I have warranty till 2008, see here:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=44908

But I'm thinking to buy an Asus A6Ja, enough Acer for me.

Since I dont own any other laptop than Acer TM291, my assessment would not be authenitcally comparative. However in my staff people use to have different laptops and I have heard some experiences. My feeling is acer laptops are very good build, they may not seem to, but they really are. I have used my laptop very roughly in last 2 yrs. Many times I have just travelled having bare laptop in hand without any bag or cover. Screen is great, I have seen couple of Dell and sony screens only better than mine. (it has 1400X1050 res), its brightness, sharpness are great.I do feel viewing angle is narrow. Screen doesn have any scratches despite of rough use and no official cleaning with popular cleaning kits what so ever. It has one dead pixel though. Mousepad is rock-sturdy. Keyboard is OK but IBMs has better keyboards.
I would definitely buy another Acer, probably higher-end model this time.

The older ones do not represent the current models' build quality at all.

I remember when I was drooling over the Acer 602TER laptop... top of the line.. wow..

I have owned an Acer Travelmate 3200 for approx 18 months. I have taking it on about 7 business trips, frequently bring from office to home and from office to coffee shop. When I travel I use a laptop sleeve inside a wheeled carry on - that is to say it's not overly protected and a lot of weight gets pressed on it when it gets put in the overhead bin - so far the machine is in great shape, I have had no issues with surface scratching or paint coming off, cosmetically it looks almost as good as new. I have had no hardware problems or need to send it in for repair. BTW I have used it every day as a desktop replacement for about a year.

I am very pleased with this machine. As others mentioned the specs are good, my machine is a 14.1 inch weighing only 4.6 lbs with a good graphics card + a very nifty port replica that only cost $99.

A few annoying things - fan is on a lot and got some interferance noise from somewhere.

I have talked to tech support twice. I'd say average.

I paid $1500 for it - thin and lights tend to be a bit more pricey. I'd say it has been excellent value.

I am sure the build quality is higher on Fujitsu, Lenovo, Sony, however similar models were closer to $2,000.

One thing I like about Acer is that they throw everything into the package, I am researching a model for a friend i.e the TM4000 series, it comes with 1 gig ram where as Dell you have upgrade.

My friend has 3 Aspires in his family and is happy with them except for the poor battery life.

One final thought, I am not going to wait 4 years to see if it falls apart, I'll replace it before 3 years are up.

I do agree there with "The Hurricane", that newer models' built quality may be suffering a bit but I think that is same with all manufacturers.

I've had my wlci3003 for about 3 months. I have been very happy with it over all. However, I went into knowing it was not top of the line. I have kept my expectations in line with what the machine is. It has met and probably exceeded all my expectations.

Only thing I have to complain about, other than the battery (who does'nt complain them), is the Norton virus scanner. I thought I would just use it for the 3 month free trial and then go with Computer Associates version. Norton is such a huge resourse hog, I stripped it out after only 2 weeks. It added about 45 seconds to the boot up and bogged down the complete sytem. Never will I use it again.

Hi just bought the Acer TravelMate 4402WLMi yesterday from CompUSA, it's my first laptop and I love it! It feels very solid to me, from the keys to the screen.
I was a litllt unsure at first, I felt like I should have bought an HP or Dell or some other name brand, but now I'm glad I didn't.

I couldn't be happier, now I just need a second one for my wife who loves it as much as me.

LOL, uninstalling Norton Antivirus was the first thing I did after taking my LG T1 out of the box.
