I did not see anything about leaving the backup partition.
This is what I want to do, install a new os over my vista home premium 32 bit. I want a new OS, but I wish to leave the backup partition to what the laptop came with. Just incase this new os does not work I can format with the backup partition. This is my HDD, vista and vista partition. This is what I want it to be, 7 and vista partition(to reformat just incase.)

You install it over the Windows partition. The recovery partition will remain untouched.

ok thank you. I am 32 bit, and the win7 I will buy is 64 bit. I checked my cpu and it runs 64 bit. everything will right? And how would I install it over the vista partition, format it then install 7? I am kind of a newbie too computers, someone mind explaining to do step by step?

if I were to buy a 32 bit win7, while on vista could I put the disk in and it upgrades?

When you run the installer, it takes you through step by step, and asks you where you want to install 7.

how do i run the installer, I would have to remove vista first right? I believe their is 3 partitions on this hard drive, c:\, d:\, and the back up partition. Would it be possible to have two operating systems, but only load with 7 and keep vista on the other?

You run the installer by putting the disk in the computer and either running it as any other program, or booting to it.

You can dual boot Vista and 7 but it's stupidly redundant.

really? Just running it like any program works? Well, I heard that I will need 32 bit home premium of 7 to do that. Is this true?

nvm i figured out how to boot a cd.
Just a question, since I am leaving the vista partition just incase will installing 7 change my bios or no? cause if I change my bios then I cannot format since I access the format partition via the bios(alt+f10 at load screen.)
I also want to keep vista(compability reasons) can I just load 7 as primary but if I need to switch to vista?

Installing an operating system does not affect the BIOS. From the questions you are asking, I would not recommend you attempt to create a dual-boot system.

alright, anyways. So once I install 7(and hopefully this won't happen) and overwrite vista and something happens, i can restart my comp hit alt f10 reformat and i got vista again. I believe I have 3 partition its one hdd, c:\,d:\ and the hidden on. vista is on c;\, d:\ will work fine with 7 as the os right? Sorry for all the questions, I just don't want to "hurt" my laptop.

Your recovery partition should still work. Though it's not guaranteed. It's always a good idea to burn/purchase recovery discs.

    That's hardware coded.

There are ways of installing an OS off of a flash drive. Or buy/borrow an external DVD drive.

ok, I have recovery disks. If i cannot format to vista via the computer i'd boot to the vista cd's like i did with 7? what if I do a clean format of my pc and remove all the partitions, would the vista recovery still work(from the cd)?

BTW If you have 32-bit Vista you cannot install 64-bit Windows 7 over it. You have to do a clean install. This means you should back up your data first and you will have to reinstall all additional applications.

I already answered that. Buy/borrow an external DVD drive. What else could you do with it? Make it into shiny coaster?

Ok I got win 7 and it works...I left pqservice alone but when I hit alt f10 it gives me an error. If I want to get vista back for some weird reason should I boot from the recovery disks?
