What web browser does Vista Home Basic come with? Is it IE6 or IE7?

I'm a bit stumped because it seems that may have foolishly removed IE7 from my laptop. Chrome is on there now, but a shortcut to IE7 is still on the quick launch bar.

I wanted to bring IE7 back and install it, but I don't see a copy for Vista home basic online.

All versions of Vista come with IE7, but you should upgrade to 8.

No, I tried 8 on another computer and it didn't work well. IE7 was very good. How can I get it back? Is there a download for it Vista Home basic?

Solved! I didn't do a thing to solve this. I just let Windows update run. That brought back IE7. I don't know how it did it, but its working just fine now.

In fact, I did the same thing on my desktop that runs XP. After removing IE8, IE7 would not install. It kept saying that there was a newer version already installed. Again, I just let Windows update run and before you know it I had IE6 back. IE7 installed fine then.

BTW: Problems with IE8: There were times when I clicked a link on a web page and IE8 immediately closed - in a flash - without warning. So much for that.

Problems with the latest Chrome: It does a poor job of blocking pop-ups. Frankly, there were a very large number of redirections to advertising. There were from links on google search results. I don't mind when a bit get through, but after 10 in one hour, I had enough. Its peculiar that if I closed the ad page and then clicked the same link, the proper page was displayed. I was amazed; I just can't understand how that works.

Anyway. I consider this conversation closed. Thanks for trying to help anyway

I should correct the above. I discovered that the ads, pop-ups, and drop outs in IE8 and Chrome were caused by a virus/worm. When the system states were rolled back via restore points, the browsers became somwhat more stable, but not free of the problem. My apologies to Microsoft and Google for blaming them in error.

I should add though that Chrome's lack of a bookmark merge/overwrite option was the straw that sent me back to IE.
