Installing Factory Recovery Disk on New Hard Drive

I made factory recovery disks using the e recovery software. I bought a Western Digital 250 gb SATA Hard drive.

Before I installed the new drive I checked the Western Digital and the Acer web sites to see what might need to be done prior to installing the OS. Nothing on Western Digital but a program called Data LifeGaurd Tolos which seems to be for EIDE drives and Windows XP. I could find nothing on Acer.

When I run the 1st recovery cd it errors at 90 to 95% of the recovery on disk 1.
Error: Restore Failed Reason: 0Xd000001e Click to restart computer. I tried this twice and got the same error.

I emailed Acer and their response was "According to the serial number you provided, this unit was purchased from Best Buy. Best Buy handles all technical support and repair on units purchased from them. Please contact them for further assistance." I have never heard of this before. My opinion of Acer just dropped ten points.

Any help on replacing a hard drive and reinstalling the original OS from the factory burned discs?--

Do you have you old hard disk still i suggest you put back in go into and burn new set of recovery disk sound like they damged or did.nt burn right

 

I reinstalled the factory drive and reburned the recovery disks. The second set will not even boot the laptop. When I burned them I had checked the VERIFY BACKUP IMAGE hoping that this would make sure they are correct.

 

Make a recovery disk using something like norton ghost first then install new drive then recover it. It will work.

 

I have Norton Ghost 10 which is not compatable with Vista. Any other programs that might be freeware that would do the trick?

 

Ok, here's my experience with Acer Laptops as well as a HUGE question that I'm totally stumped on.

Rig: Acer Aspire 3690 w/ 80GB HDD with several partitions.

I low level formatted the drive with the appropriate Hitachi tools. So now it's a blank drive just like Vrolok likes it. Realized you CANNOT use the eRecovery discs created or purchased without first creating the proper partitions. Since I had no memory of what those partitions were, Acer Support says to download an .ISO file that will basically fdisk and format to factory settings then you can use the eRecovery CD/DVDs. I run those next and it completes without any issues. Here is where the problem lies, when I boot up next, it states no OS found on the HDD.

I took out the HDD and set it up as an external to my system PC. It loads fine and I can see all the OS and system files on there are in tact. However, the HDD is still one large partition. My first thought is that the MBR or BIOS is defaulting to boot from a partition that isn't there or wasn't created. How do I fix this so it knows to boot from this specific partition?

Is that even the issue?

The only way to install a new HD on the Acer , are to build two partitions, at list.

The erecovery needs the second partition as space, to decompress the image stored on the DVD.

And to be perfectly honest , the erecovery needs to find three partitions.
The Acer eRecovery scripts , shows to direct data at both No2 + No3 partitions , at the restoration process.

 

if you add a new drive to an acer computer you have to download the hard drive setup iso off there site iam trying to find a link. But if you enter the recovery disc and it says no hard drive found it needs that ran on it. It is a small 8 meg iso that you boot from that formats the hard drive before the recovery.

 

I may be upgrading my 80gb Aspire 5052 shortly to a 320GB HDD. I rang Acer and they said that I can use my recovery CDs and it will boot off those so long as the HDD is formatted. I tried using my recovery CDs on Virtual PC and everything worked fine. On Virtual PC when the recovery disk 2 was running it created only 1 partition and restored my OS onto that and when the OS booted everything worked fine! I wonder whether its essential for the HDD to be formatted or not?

 

The HDD should always be formatted yes. An To a post earlier, it is always good to have 2 partitions but its not essential really. 2 partitions really just there to protect the os or ur files, keeping one partition for the os and the other for your files and stuff. that way if one goes down the other doesnt go with it, cause when u are restoring u can choose to format one drive if ur forced to do a re installation.
