I am no expert on this, but this was what I did to install XP on the unit, which I bought at Wal-mart last Friday. I have access to another PC while doing all of these, so there was some trial and error in the sequences, but the following should work:
1.Get a snap shot of the Device Manager of the unit before wiping everything off.
2.Make a CD of the WLAN driver Atheros WR5007EG, which I found here:
http://www.marlwifi.org.nz/ I downloaded Ver 5.3.0 (USB stick won't work after XP is first intalled, hence a CD)
3.Go to BIOS and in Main change "AHCI" mode to "IDE" mode. (I did not do this initially, and XP Pro Install disk did not find any hard drives, so no go.) Set DVD Rom as first boot.
4.Intall XP Pro.
5.Install WLAN driver and connect it to the Internet.
6.Do Windows Updates to include SP2.
7.Open this PDF with Acer Drivers:
http://www.acerpanam.com/synapse/forms/AcerDrivers/Aspire 5315.pdf?CFID=4579013&CFTOKEN=98236837
8.From this PDF download and install the following:
Intel Chipset Driver v8.3.0.1013
Intel VGA Driver v6.14.10.4847
Launch Manager v2.0.05
RealTek Audio Driver v6.0.1.5443
Foxconn Modem Driver Ver. 7.66.0.50
9.Let Windows search for and find drivers for the Broadcom LAN, which eventually worked. (Somehow, I could not get the driver downloaded from the above PDF list to work).
Anyways, no expert here, but I was able to get XP on the unit and everything seems to be working well

That's basically the process to install XP on a sata drive.

I got an Acer Aspite 5315-2153 laptop from Walmart running XP Pro SP2 under SATA mode=AHCI set in the BIOS after completing XP Pro SP2 install under IDE mode, then rebooted and forced install AHCI_Intel_v7.5.0.1017_XP.ZIP from http://www.acerpanam.com with Intel(R) 82801HEM/HBM SATA AHCI Controller. So far so good the laptop is working normally. I dunno if I pick the correct Intel(R) 82801HEM/HBM SATA AHCI Controller though.. See the screen shots at

I have not been able to get a working Windows XP modem driver for this computer. Can somebody give me a link to the KNOWN working file ? I have unknow hardware as "PCI Device" that I'm assuming is the modem I can't get installed.
Thanks ! -
I got it working by using the Agere driver. Get it from Gateway via ftp
ftp://ftp.gateway.com/pub/hardware_support/drivers/win_vista/modem/D20004-002-001.exe
BTW, further my previous reply about enabling SATA mode with AHCI mode, I downloaded Intel® Matrix Storage Technology from
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/fil...XP+Professional&lang=eng&strOSs=44&submit=Go!
It revalidated AHCI driver I installed as the correct one. Se snap shot at

I got the modem on mine installed by using this:

Hi BigZZ, did you test your modem if it works? Mine does with Agere driver. When I clicked 'Query modem' in the 'Agere Systems HDA modem Properties' it return this:

How about yours??? -
Take it you and BigZZZ are fellow Canadians who scored the Acers at Wally World last weekend? They screwed up a bit at ours (or so they want us to believe) and sold us the Aspire 5100 instead (Turion 64 X2 TK53, 1GB of ram, 120gb hard drive, 15.4" LCD, Windows Vista Premium). Already swapped the ram for 2gb, and Vista now moves at a reasonable speed.
-
XWIN, how do you force the installation of the SATA drivers after the OS is installed?
Have you noticed a difference after the driver change? -
At first laptop ran a little slower until I installed RAID/AHCI Software - Intel® Matrix Storage Manager (iata70_enu.exe 5640KB) from http://downloadcenter.intel.com/dow...All&OSFullName=All+Operating+Systems&lang=eng plus the Intel® Matrix Storage Manager program will also correct in case you pick the wrong AHCI controller.
-
Oppps, about force install. May be try installing first that iata_70.exe will do it, if not here...
Okay, after completing XP SP2 install extract files from AHCI_Intel_v7.5.0.1017_XP.zip to C:\AHCI_Intel_v7_5_0_1017_XP (whatever). Needed files are...
iaahci.cat
iaahci.inf
iastor.cat
iastor.inf
iastor.sys
TXTSSETUP.OEM
You may delete the rest.
Now go to Device Manager, under IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers you should see: Intel 82801HEM/HBM SATA AHCI Storage Controller
- Right-Click on that and select Update Driver
- Say no to connecting to Windows Update to search, hit Next
- Select Install fro a list or specific location (Advanced), hit Next
- Select "Don't search. I will choose the driver to install", hit Next
- Select Have Disk
- Browse to C:\AHCI_Intel_v7_5_0_1017_XP and highlight the iastor.inf file, hit Open
- Select OK
- Now you should have a list of controllers, for the Compaq nx9420 choose Intel 82801HEM/HBM SATA AHCI Storage Controller, hit Next
- You'll get warned that installing the device driver is not recommended, click Yes to continue installing
- Click Finish
- Click Yes to restart your computer
When your computer boots up, you need to hit F10 to enter the BIOS. Change SATA mode to AHCI, save changes and exit.
After you log into Windows, your computer will find the "new" hardware. Wait until you get the popup message to restart your computer, say Yes to restart one last time. -
I've tried 8 billion different modem drivers and none of them are working. I wonder wtf is going on. I still have an unknown "PCI Device" listed as "Other Devices" in Device Manager.
-
I'm beginning to think not all "5315"'s are the same thing. I have 3 of the wal mart specials here, and none of them will install a modem driver from the links you guys are using. This one says it's a 5315-2153, and when it's running Vista, it says the modem is a "HDAUDIO Soft Data Fax Modem With SMARTCP" which is supposed to be a conexant device, but none of the generic drivers @ conexant work either.
Anybody else having this problem ?
Thanks -
From the PDF list I posted, one has to conclude that Aspire5315 did not use the same parts across the board. There are two modem drivers and two VGA drivers, for example. I tried both modem drivers and one installed and the other did not. I have not tested the modem, because I am never going to use it. I installed it just not to see the annoying prompt reminding me that something is still not installed.

this guide allowed me to dial up:
http://soulpass.com/2007/11/10/installing-windows-xp-professional-sp2-on-acer-aspire-5315-2153-laptop
although people should note that if they have an unidentified PCI device, that is -not- the modem. the modem is a HDA modem, it will never show up like that.. the unidentified PCI device could the the actual HDA -bus- which is from the intel chipset.. make sure you have intel chipset drivers already installed, then maybe try right-clicking on the unidentified PCI device, and clicking update driver, and letting it work it's magic on the "automatic" settings.
if you run into issues, restoring CMOS settings and following that guide from start to finish will probably set things straight. we've done a few here in virginia with it, but maybe other areas really did get a different version of 5315-2153?
good luck. -
im actually stuck at the AHCI settings. i've tried all the suggestions here but to no avail....
-
stuck in what way? if you could provide some details, that would be good.
are you trying to do the "Install XP in IDE-Mode, then switch to AHCI", or the "Install XP in IDE-Mode and leave it that way" or the "Install XP in AHCI in the first place" method?
all 3 are a little different, the most -simple- is probably just to set it to "IDE Mode" and leave it that way, the most bullet-proof is probably to install WinXP in AHCI in the first place.
but the main thing: exactly where are you stuck, what have you done or can't you do? -
Evening All,
I am from the Australia, today i brought the Acer 5315 model with celeron 550 processor and 1GB ram. I hate Vista , it was running damm slow.
so can you guys plz help me to install XP Sp2 on my new lappy-can some body provide step to step procedure ?
Thanks -
check this link it has all the info and links to all the drivers you will need...
just be sure to make the Quick Restore disks before starting w/ the XP install,, and also besure to download and burn all the drivers to a cd so you'll have easy access...
the CD method mentioned on the page works great. just follow the instructions and you shouldn't have any problems
