Hi all. I recently upgraded the CPU in my Acer Aspire 3050-1150 to a Turion XL-56. The first bootup was a breeze, and Windows Vista Home Basic recognized the new chip no problem. Temps ended up being cooler than before the upgrade.

Later that day, comp just shut down. I tried to reboot...comp started but shut off a second or two into loading windows. Next boot attempt the on/off switch wouldn't work at all...appeared dead. I waited a few minutes, took out the AC adapter and windows booted. Next time at bootup, similar pattern, but wouldnt boot even with the AC adapter taken out. This time it booted with the battery out and AC in.

Similar pattern at every bootup...false starts, shuts down at various points, but then eventually boots up after several attempts. I have just been leaving it on, in sleep mode when not in use. I am very afraid of doing a windows update which requires a reboot, so I haven't been doing that.

    Any ideas?? Thank you all.

Just a guess but sounds like it may be a loose connection of some sort left after your upgrade - I'd start by rechecking all connections/plugs to make sure they are properly seated.

thanks spud. i thought of that too, but would that lead to an intermittent problem, or a more consistent situation?

Try reseating the CPU again, if the heatsink is crushing the CPU die then you could get problems like this.

Thank you flipfire, but nope...no dice. Reseated the CPU, made sure the heatsink was not too tight on it. Checked and re-checked all connections. First boot was fine, then subsequent boots showed the same behavior. Restart worked fine though...just a cold boot from the power button seems to give me the trouble, but eventually it turns on.

    Any other ideas?

FYI...there is a single, barely audible 'beep' followed immediately by the slight 'click' of the power shutting off. It doesn't sound like the usual BIOS beep...it is barely audible.

Did you check to see if a bios upgrade was necessary for the new CPU to be recognized ?
I know you said Windows recognized but there could be an issue with the motherboard.
Just because a CPU will fit the socket doesn't mean it will work.
Try putting the old Sempron back in - if your system boots and works then you can be reasonably sure it's a compatability issue.
