I was considering the 4820TG Timelinex model.

I've only heard bad things about acer. How's the build quality?
Are you guys having a lot of problems?

According the recent rating of manufactures reliability acer takes about 60% while hp and dell 65% and 67%.
But i think this laptop is very nice from the reviews it gets in the last three months only some few issues about the screen and its quality

3820TG and 4820TG here and loving them. Acer USED to have some issues in quality 3-4 years ago but make a fantastic machine now

I can almost say my 5820TG ($799) has higher quality than the new thinkpad my friend bought for $1500 two weeks ago.

I've owned a TimelineX 3820TG since last June and love it. Build quality and reliability has been great.

Where I work we have Thinkpad T4xx models and T5xx models and honestly I can't see much difference other than the fact the Lenovos are now butt ugly compared to both older thinkpads and my Timeline. Build wise they're pretty similar.

The TimelineX Series is NOT the typical bulky chunky plasticy looking design of the cheaper and older Acers. honestly if the keyboard had a little bit better action I'd be completely pleased. As it is, the keyboard is ok, but not great for touchtyping. Everything else is quite good.

    Good to hear :).
I can tell from pictures alone that its not complete crap quality like some older models but what worried me the most was the screen.
I already know the display quality isnt amazing..
Is the actual panel easily broken though?

Since i'll be on the go with it every day I want to be sure that it will still function after a drop or two.

I think another place Acer would skimp on is cooling, which also affects noise from the fans (clearly).
I'll be gaming with it on the side so I want to be sure its not gonna overheat.

the screen is pretty standard. you can swap them easily if you beak one on your own with basic tools, but it is no weaker than anyone elses. ( ok were NOT talking toughbooks here )

as for cooling the timeline X is VERY good .... better than my x201t, my MBP's and my Viao Z not quite as good as my clevo and Elitebook

My screen has survived a bicycle crash and I use it at school every day, so it's not gonna break easily. Don't put pressure on the lid though, I've got 3 bright spots because I've squashed the laptop between books and stuff.

Second part is worrisome. I'd be putting it in a bag with books too.
It does have a nice padded compartment tho.

    How long you owned it?

Padded compartments = you're safe. I think he meant he had books on wrong angles which squeezed against the screen lid with the book corners (quite serious abuse of the laptop).

The TimelineX's sport solid aluminum screen lids, they are tougher than your average-joe plastic lids.
