Hello ,
My name is George i just joined this forum because i have some concerns buying the ACER Aspire V Nitro VN7-591G-77A9.
First of all is Acer a good brand? Whats your experiences with acer laptops ( please dont post about cheap laptops im talking about the ´´expensive´´ ones ,all companies have -not so good- laptops)
Will the VN7 be a good choice? Have you heard any complaints from this model?
Does it get hot and noisy when surfing the web for hours?
Hows battery life ?
Ill dual boot the HardDrive with LInux and Windows will it be easy to do it via USB (no dvd drive) ?
are there Any malfunctioning features of this laptop?
Thanks

1. Acer isn't a good brand, well, for me. Their Mother Boards are NOT GOOD.
2. You can do some research for reviews about this laptop and comments from the customers and buyers of this laptop.
3. I checked out some reviews and it is actually quite QUIET.
4. The battery is a 3-Cell. To me, if you only surf the web, it will probably last for 3 hours. It should not be longer than 2 hours if you game.
5 & 6. I may not be so sure about that question sadly...
But I recommend buying MSI, Toshiba, ASUS or even Lenovo. Especially MSI and Toshiba, they have good prices and good mother boards. ASUS and Lenovo is famous for their designs. I have a Lenovo laptop, it's model is Y410P. I jut bought it and it's going well.
Again, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND to NEVER buy Acer laptops. They don't last long. My brother, father and mother bought Acer Laptops. They didn't last even a year. Then, I had a Toshiba Laptop. It lasted for around 5-7 years. Untill the GPU fried...
If you need more help on looking for better laptops, tell me your budget, I can get the perfect laptop for you. As I see you are going for Gaming.
HOPE I HELPED -
I have tended to have fairly decent experience with Acer, and looking at reviews of the Nitro it appears to be rather nice. Acer tends to be a very bargain brand giving good value, but not necessarily best quality. This model appears to have good build quality, my biggest worry would be GPU temps under prolonged heavy load. They are not scary, but are worrisome (true of most thinner laptops)
It should run cool for Wifi, for gaming it runs more mediocre the temps aren't terrible, but they are located under the keyboard.
It is fairly quiet even under load which is nice.
Battery life is not so great : 220 mins (wifi) or 170 (DvD) or 110 (gaming)
Only HDMI port if you use external monitors (NO VGA or Display Port)
Edit: if you are looking for an inexpensive but thin 17" laptop I should note there is an expected Clevo to be released in the near future (likely 2 weeks - 2 months) -
I want the laptop to be 15.6inch because ill be taking it to the class with me in university and thats why i need at least 3-5hours of battery life when coding/taking notes/ surifng .
In reviews and website i see it says 8.5h of battery life so i expect at least 3-5h from that laptop. It also is going to be used for entertainment . Its the only laptop i found with 1tb hdd + 128gb ssd ( i store many and big files i need those storage options)
max budget 1000euro. Personally i think its a good laptop all the germans say so..
I saw some reviews and they stated that it has 45min battery life when gaming and 5-6hours for office work.
I guess it suits me... -
Buy it. I had the chance to try it in a local store, a good performance machine in an angel look. The fan is really good considering how thin the laptop while making little noise. I would have already bought one until i heard the news about incoming Asus G751, she's the one.

I see you have a budget around 1250 USD. Ok, here's a nice laptop below your budget.
MSI GE60 2PC Apache
CPU: Intel Core i7 4710HQ (Turbo up 3.5GHz, 6MB Cache)
GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 850M 2GB GDDR5
OS: Windows 8
Display: 15'6 FHD 1920 x 1080, Anti Glare LED Backlit
RAM: 8GB
Storage: 1TB HDD 7200rpm
ODD: Super Multi DVDRW
Connection: Killer E2200 LAN Intel 802.11ac, BT 4.0, USB 3.0, Matrix Display
Screen: 15'6 Inch
BTW MSI laptop mother board are THE BEST I know, Toshiba buys these mother boards from MSI. Acer perhaps, have the WORST Mother Boards I know. That's why they are quite cheap.

thanks for the info but i couldnt find the storage options the acer offers anywhere else. Having 1TB hdd + 128gb ssd is really good for me because i will have windows 8.1 on the ssd and make 100GB partition from the 1TB disk to install Linux so i can have dual boot!
I went to the store today and checked it out and i have to say its an AMAZING Laptop especially the screen, it was the best around the shop. I also found a friend that works there and he told me that he will buy it for because he can get 20% discount (200euro cheaper) and i will give him the money after.
I also noticed that the quallity was good compared to other acer laptops, maybe this laptop is an excpetion for acer....
So yea basically 800euro for that kind of laptop is way more then AWESOME ! -
Toshiba Laptops and their motherboards are actually ODM Quanta and Compal. very few laptops in the consumer market have any input from their respective brand. the ODM is given a spec and a drawing and told to build it.
List of laptop brands and manufacturers - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Microstar currently uses of all things a Compal motherboard with a customized BIOS/EFI according to the regulatory codes on my soon to be son in laws GS60, but overall is one of the few that designs and manufacturers.
Acer on the other hand you cant judge by its name. it has had some absolute garbage laptop models ( 2008-2010 especially ) but it has also had some fantastic models as well.
Just like HP and Dell, who have some junk models in their consumer lines not worth the packaging, but yet their top end business models make every laptop I have seen or touched since they started coming out in the early 90's look like complete junk judge a laptop by its model not by the name stamped on it because in 99% of cases the name who made it isn't even close to the one you see. in todays market, brand actually means very little if anything.

I guess you got what you wanted George, but I suggest to look out for other laptops out there. If you didn't buy that MSI laptop yet. Well, I guess my job here is done! CEE YAA!

In addition to this, my HS bought a 13" Acer notebook for every student during my sophomore year, and I used the same one for note-taking, presentations, web-browsing, and even the occasional secret Halo 1 gaming session over a period of 3 years. Again, no issues or problems.
Is Acer a good brand? Based on my experience, it sure seems like it. -
and that laptop its in an awful condition outside but it still runs pretty well we only had to pay 150euro to change the screen cz she dropped it LOOL -
For me Acer has been a good laptop and i am impressed by its battery performance that lasts long (mine has 6 cells), but the one you mention has a 3 cell battery that might not lost lang if you intend to use it in places without access to net current. The amount of RAM is good (8 GB) but in your case for video editing, it might be little, I would have upgraded it.
It seems like a solid and powerful laptop for a reasonable price... go for it.
