What models are the best and worse (to avoid). Thanks. Meaning nice solid plastics, no keyboard flexing, etc.

I think my 4402 is pretty darn solid. Very little flex at all - WAY better than my old Dell C840. The keys are soft, but the keyboard backing is rock solid. Hinges are solid (though they're not metal, at least I don't think). My only beef about the build, and it's a finish issue, is that the lid scratches pretty easily. Maybe it will make it less tempting to the dishonest.

thanks mike, how about the 4202 duo core? I guess if youkeep some tin foil or something on the lid, it wouldnt mark.

I don't know where this bad build quality rap comes from.

Sure, they make $500 laptops and to hit that price there are compromises but my Ferrari is as solid as any notebook that I have ever owned or tested (and that is a lot of notebooks).

I have had this for a few months now - for me this is an eternity. I have no desire to sell this one. Maybe the the next gen Ferrari will change my mind, but it is saying a lot that the MacBook and 8204 did not tempt me away from this carbon and red beauty.

Do you think that Aspire build quality is better than than of Aspire? IMO, Aspire's hinge is stronger than TravelMate's. but not TM 8200 series as it uses carbon fibre.

travelmates and aspires in the current generation are pretty solid, they have a good tradeoff between weight and bendyness

I really like the look and feel of mine, the lid hinges are some of the most solid I have come across, dare I say even beating those lovely workhorses Toshiba turn out!?

Acer seem to be having a real go at the mainstream market, and the quality of all 3 machines I have bought (2 through work for DR) have been great.

There have also been complaints about Acer support, I find them to be polite and only once was I on hold.

They are as good or better than other providers
