    RUN! It's gonna explode!!!!

Just kidding ;) The cold-cathode light in your LCD has a limited lifetime in it. The longer you run it, the more of it's lifetime you use up. I'd suggest leaving it off if you aren't using it for more than 2-3 hours. Your LCD will last longer that way.

I don't think it's really that bad, but you should turn on the screensaver or what have you just in case.. ya know

I usually hit my "backlight off" key when I'm leaving it plugged in and walking away for a long period of time. No automatic sleep mode because I hate having it sleep at inopportune times.

+1..it's the backlight that usually quits if anything..there's no burn in like those old school crt's but definitely use that backlight off key

They last really long though I many early laptops including a compaq portable with a gas plasma screen none of them will die.I think even a hevily used laptop will last more then 10 years

It's not the screensaver. It's the backlight. The screensaver is completely separate from that. With an LCD, you don't really need a screensaver, but they're fun ;) What you really want is to have it turn off the monitor after a while, because otherwise it will shorten the life of the backlight bulb

Absolutely agree with most of the above - switch the screen off when not in use. Not only will the backlight last a lot longer, but the screen will remain brighter for longer, even with the latest LCD tech.

you 'have to' use the acer epowermanager xD it overwrites the power management from windows. unless you have a clean installation of windows ;)

Even when the screensaver kicks in, the backlight is still on. I hit the kill backlight button when I leave it for a while or I may close it completely. If I have to leave for a lengthy period of time I turn it off just in case someone comes by and bumps it.
