I've heard somewhere about a guy using the integrated graphics on his laptop for surfing, typing etc, and "activating" his dedicated more power-hungry gpu only when he needed it. Is this possible? how could i do this?
    Thank you.

There are quite a lot noebooks based on Ikovac's chasis, including AW's m5500 series, rock's Pegasus 650 etc.

Not all laptops are capable of doing this. Only laptops which come with this feature are capable of switching between GPU's.

None of the Acer's currently on sale are capable of doing this. So, if you have an Acer it is not possible.
