While the screen is nice and bright, all colors seem to have a very slight tint of yellow to them. I realize I can fix this with Nvidia Control Panel, but is the abnormal yellowish tint indicative of a defective backlight? I'm afraid I can't even return the darn thing because I already registered it online. :(

It is not defective Acer use a variety of screens from manufacturers like CMOS, AUO, LG, Samsung etc.
Anyway the screen is suppose to be 60% Gamut.
It is defective when there is dead pixel/stuck pixel.
You can try installing new drivers from Nvidia to see if it help with color calibration.

Thanks for the reply, bad luck for me I guess. Say, does anyone know how I can check which panel I have?

    Everest?
Device Manager will show but only the device id code.
Everest will tell you the make manufacturer and date manufactured.
Some manufacturers make panel that have slight tints, can't really fault them as the definition of defective doesn't include that.

    Just noticed something real strange..

It's like the more I look at the screen, the more the colors seem off, most obviosly whites, which now appears a small tinge of yellow/pink. I leave it there without moving anything for a couple of minutes, come back, and everything suddenly seem better (albeit still not perfect).

Hmm... maybe I should have my eyes checked? I'd hate to nag, but this thing is giving me headaches.

Maybe you would like to update the drivers using Nvidia Released Verde Driver Program which is far more updated than Acer Dated Drivers.
As usual uninstall the old drivers before installing the new ones.

Thanks, I'd try that after the guys at the store take a look at it. Called them yesterday night and they promised they'd exchange me a new one if my screen is noticeably worse than the demo unit. Still doubt they'd actually do the exchange, but it's worth the shot.
