    This for an Aspire 4530.
The partitions on the drive have been affected. I need some free software to re-construct them, but I cannot boot much of the linux/debian based live CD software more than once. ( see a a sibling post for that problem).

Does anyone have free partitioning software for this model of laptop, please?

    I would have suggested Gparted.

Another option: See if you can get your habd on a Vista or Windows7 install disc. If you chose the "repair" options you get a command prompt from where you can run diskpart. Diskpart documentation is available on MS website.

I tried GParted, G4L, Clonezilla, Hiren's Boot Disk, Ultimate Windows boot disk. All have the same problem...it will boot once or twice and then no more. (See my post "Will not boot DVD 2nd Time"). Had any of these worked, I would have been past this point.

I tried a Win XP install disk. It died part way through the initial driver loading.

Hahaha. No. I tried that about a year ago and failed miserably. Constructing such a device is not straightforward.

Partition Manager worked - at least in part.
On the website download page I found a Home version in an ISO format, downloaded it and burned it to a CD. It rebooted on each "apply" of a change. But I burned another CD and this time it worked well.

This is solved. Thank you all.

If you use windows Vista or Windows 7 you can use windows` built-in partition manager. Just search for:

"Create and format hard disk partitions"

It is probably the safest way to save bootable partition from any troubles...

This has been solved. The Partition Manager worked.

Sadly, I discovered that the laptop's DVD drive is scratching the DVDs. New recordings work, but after a few boots, the laptop no longer reads them. Its only been 18 months and its been used only a few hours per month and the drive was used so very little.
