I just ordered some memory for my new laptop. Upgrading from 1g to 2g. On the Crucial website it says I need the 200-pin sodimm, ddr2 pc2-4200 memory module.

I ordered this Kingston listed below but it's PC2 5300 . Is this Ok? Sorry I'm a newb.

    Kingston 2GB ( 2 x 1GB ) PC2 5300 667MHz 200-pin SODIMM DDR2 Laptop Memory

You should be OK. PC5300 RAM is usually backwards compatible and will run at PC4200 speed if that's all your computer will do.

like john said, you should be fine the 5300 dimms are actually faster,, basically they can perform more memory transfers per second and while your computer may not be able to use the extra performance of the ram it should work perfectly fine, who knows your motherboard may detect the SPD info of the RAM and lower your latency times to use some of the 5300 memory's speed advantage. i wouldn't worrry to much about it.

    good luck,

they will probably work together,, but not good.. this is the way i understand the DDR
i may be wrong,, if so then i appologize.

you will no longer get the DDR feature of the memory... and both pieces of ram will be forced to run at the speed of the slower stick...

so putting in that 512mb will slow your memoy subsytem down to 266mhz..
imo, it's not worth the extra ram if your memory's speed is going to drop by 400mhz...

to clarify by using 2 differnet sized sticks of ram you disable the DDR cutting each stick's maximum speed in half... now because you are using 2 different speeds of ram, the motherboard will slow both to the lower speed ram's settings. 533 divided by 2 = 266Mhz ....

i would rather have 1g of 667mhz ram as opposed to 1.5g of 266mhz ram..

    hope it makes sense,
    bigozone
