Okay so just got my 3820tg from staples today

    I have a couple questions,
    1) removing the bloatware? Any tips? Right now im planning on just going through all the add and remove programs list

    2) Keyboard cover? Where did you get yours...theres one on ebay for a couple bucks but it takes like 20 days to ship to canada..

    3) installing xp pro...I am considering it? is there any advantage or more importantly disadvantage to doing so..

    Let me know,
    thanks

mine came with norton and a bunch of other stuff that is pretty hard to remove. add remove programs doesnt totally remove it. ive seen it leave running services behind even after removing it. so i just made a copy of my key and reinstalled windows 7. it ran so much faster afterwards.

thanks guys -- looks like ill be doing a clean install of windows 7 in the next little while.
btw, is the recovery disk sufficient to do a clean install or do i need a windows 7 disk from microsoft ?

Also, when making the recovery disks themselves - is it possible to do it without a external drive connected to the laptop? rather i was thinking if there is a way to create an iso image of the recovery disk and then put that on my network and burn the iso to dvd through my desktop burner? i do this all the time for other files just not sure if its possible to make an iso of the recovery disks

Windows XP is dead. Do not install that anymore, even on old machines. Windows 7 runs better then XP even on a Pentium III 1ghz with 1GB RAM.

ADDED: You can always use the Windows 7 Backup utility to make an image on an external drive.

No the recovery discs will install the bloatware also. You need a clean copy.Download it from here.

You need an external burner for the recovery discs.Your method doesn't work. You cannot create an ISO.

You'll have to install all the necessary drivers.

seems like a lot of trouble.

Worth it compared to just clearning out everything visible that you can track down and delete/disable? After all, its' not a 486 with a 20mb hard drive and 1mb of ram...

Simply uninstalling (or disabling) the bloatware worked for me.

To make the DVD use the virtual Phantom Drive (i used it to create them).
I have just uninstalled McAfee for the free Avira solution. Anyone knows if the uninstall option of the McAfee leaves something behind?

About the Bloatware, what have you people unistalled, why and how?
About making a clean install, how to install some acer programs that seem good (as the recovery options, etc )??

    Thanks!

If you use eRecovery to create an "application and driver" backup DVD, all of the files are there to reinstall any of the factory programs. All I use is launch manager.

The only large bloat I saw was Acer games, Norton backup, and McAfee internet security. There were some smaller things that I've removed also but the 3820TG has nothing compared to many other systems I've used. I was surprised by how little actually got installed in the hour I was waiting for it to install everything on first boot.

I used PC Decrapifier to remove bloatware.

    www.pcdecrapifier.com/download

Really easy to use and free. Installs in seconds. Just indicate that you have a new computer during setup. It will identify all non-essential programs, making a list, and have you tick boxes next to the ones you want to remove. In a couple of steps, you have exactly what you want on your computer. Removed Norton back up and Mcaffee no problem. Afterward, I just ran ccleaner to clean the registry (probably not necessary).

+1 for decrapifier. A clean install is great, but too much trouble for most peeps.
