My 3 year old acer 4810T didn't type the letters 'p' and 'o' when I turned it on the other day. I restarted, and then the two letters got 'stuck' and i got lots of pppppppp and ooooooo. Then, the mouse pad wasn't responding properly. I smelled a virus and took it to a computer repair shop so they check. Plus, the day before a friend of mine plugged an external hard disk on my computer so I thought it might have gotten something from it. The thing is, when I was there, the external keyboard (USB) that they tried to use didn't work either...it somehow got 'stuck' and wouldn't type at all.
Which led me to think that it wasn't a hardware issue (otherwise why wouldn't the external one work?) but a software one. They didn't find a virus (that's how far along they've come with their 'analysis of the problem') and they will try to see what the problem is.

What could it be though? If it's not a virus, then what is it? I don't trust this repair shop anymore, so I'm looking for more ideas on what might be causing this.
