    Please help!

I got an Acer Aspire 3690 in March, and two of the keys have come off. It doesn't look like they should be hard to get back on, but I can't seem to do it.

    Can anyone give me advice?

I bought it through tiger direct. Should I go to them?

    Thanks.

My advice, as long as it is still under warranty take it back to them and make them fix it for you. After all you paid extra for the warranty so why not use it instead of poking around and "trying" to fix it, you could cause more damage than you had before...

    Hi

Please say how the keys came off. Was it through normal use or were you maybe trying to vacuum the keyboard to remove dust?

LOL I've had my fair share of laptop keys coming off. I popped a key off my keyboard the other day just to get some cat hair out from under it.

They are very very easy to put back on. First you have to make sure you have all of the parts still...

There should be at least two of the little plastic spring clips. These are the things that are either H or maybe Y shaped. They need to be reconnected to the laptop OR the broke off key for this to work. There should also be the little piece of rubber that acts as the spring to give the key the "bounce", this piece stays on the keyboard side in the middle where the contacts should be. When all of these pieces are in place.

You just place the key atop where it goes and push down on it with a light force through your finger. It will pop right back into position and it should work from there on out. It is as simple as that.

I've replaced laptop keys on an Emachines, a Toshiba and a few on my Acer this way.

I discovered this trick on my old piece of garbage Toshiba laptop after my cat decided to dig her claw across the keyboard to keep from falling off a table. She took off quite a few keys and I finally instead of being real tedious trying to pop the little plastic springed pieces into place, which was impossible because everything is so small and there was no room, I just pushed the key down onto the keyboard and it attached like a charm. Almost like they designed it go on that way.

    Thanks Ewraven

I replied cautiously to seanmom's question. I regularly use a paintbrush (quality soft type that has never seen paint before) in conjunction with a vacuum cleaner to clean my keyboards and sreen of dust.

It can get hairy though (excuse the pun) because you have to be really careful that you don't suck too close to the keyboard otherwise you end up with a bunch of keys stuck in the vacuum cleaner and not where the should be....on the keyboard. Then you have to put them back in the right places.

"Hi There" could become "Ho 67yry".

Seriously though, not recommended practise to vacuum but it works for me.

If I am careless and I get too close (twice only) then I simply gently push the keys back where they belong. Works like a dream.

If however, the keys are falling off through normal use the keyboard should be replaced.

You are welcome. I hope I explained it well enough.

I agree if the keys are coming off on there own from like just typing on the keyboard, there are more problems and a new keyboard should be installed.

I've actually got an extra keyboard for my Acer 290LMi. When I got it back from service once, the keyboard didn't work right. Upon calling customer service, the guy emailed me directions for how to disasemble some things to make sure the keyboard was plugged in all the way. He also shipped out a new keyboard at the same time. I asked what to do with the extra keyboard if I was able to fix it by plugging it in all the way. He told me to just keep the keyboard and so I have an extra now.

I've been to the ACER USA service center, it is almost exactly 100 miles away from me in Temple Texas. They used to have this service where if you dropped off the laptop there, they would gaurantee that it would be fixed within like three hours. I did that once when my laptop broke and it was fixed in just a few hours while I tooled around the Temple area. I did have there three year extended warranty though which expired in October of 2006. :(

But this thing has been exceedingly reliable for me.
