    Hello,

My Acer Aspire 5920G appears to have 'died' and I thought I'd try here before contacting Acer. Despite being under warranty, Acer have found loopholes to charge exorbitant fees every time something goes wrong.

Anyhoo, the 2.5 year-old laptop was working perfectly last night. This morning, I opened it and:

    T: Pressed power button
T+2secs: DVD drive clicks on, hard drive spins up, everything seems normal
T+5secs: NumLock light flashes, but visible POST/BIOS *does not appear*. The screen never shows anything.
T+8secs: Hard drive is still on but ceases activity. Operating system is not loaded.

(I took the timings at a subsequent attempt, but every attempt follows the same pattern)

    I've tried:
    - running from battery, AC and both
    - reseating the memory modules
    - replacing and removing the hard drive
    - booting with a boot disk in the DVD drive
    - booting with an external monitor attached

to no avail. From this end, I'm not sure what else I could try. Clearly there's no 'good' time for a laptop failure, but this is a pretty terrible time, so I was hoping to avoid Acer spending 6 weeks deciding how many hundreds to charge me.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Sorry to hear it :(
Based on what you wrote, I would have presumed the graphics card (discrete / onboard), or did you see something on the screen like "No OS found". etc...

The screen remains blank. No POST, no BIOS, no messages or activity of any kind. If an external monitor is plugged in, it never detects activity.

    Welcome to the Forums!!

OK. How many times has the lappie gone "faulty" before this last incident?

Please update us to why you have shelled out so much money for what was basically a machine under warranty??

A blank screen definitly looks like ur gpu died. Personnaly I'd avoid the acer service. Go to a professional store and let them have a look at it to be sure.
Luckely for you, the acer aspire 5920g has a replacable gpu (very easy), this thread might be interesting for you.

If you had rainbow sparks, or black screen freezes during gaming: those were signs your nvidia 8600m gt was dying ^^, these cards are suicidal.

Edit: If you want I can give you a few more links where to buy a gpu for the acer aspire 5920g (you can fit in an ati hd4650^^), and a link that leads u to a site where you can see how to replace it to give you a basic idea how to do it.

Just a couple of ideas that may or may not work.

    1. Take out the cmos battery, take battery out and leave it unplugged. Then hold the power button for more than 10 seconds. Wait a few minutes for the next step.

    2. Replace cmos battery, leave battery out, plug ac adapter in, start pc and hold down F12 of delete button until it beeps (if it does).

    3. Try a universal power supply by taking it to a local pc shop. I took one to office depot once and they tested with a new universal power supply for free and it turned out to be a faulty adapter.

There is one that has always worked for me:
    1. Unplug and remove battery
    2. Press and hold power button for 60seconds
    3. Press and hold power button for 30seconds
    4. Plug-in/Insert battery
    5. Turn on and it should solve ur problems

Alternatively, while computer is off press and hold Delete key. Turn on the computer, keep holding Del key. Once it POSTS you can let go of the key.

The other thing i could suggest is stripping down to bare minimum (unplugging dvd drive, using only knowingly working RAM stick, removing HDD, etc) and also re-seat video-card (if removable) and then see if it works. Then just add module by module and see which one stops computer from working.

    Hope this helps
