    Greetings all,

I typically do not post in the Acer section since I don't own one, but my girlfriend is having troubles with her laptop.

She texted me today and said this "I heard a click in the right hinge and got a full grey screen" and "the bottom of the frame (I'm assuming bezel) pulls away from the screen completely".

Previous to this she had complained about getting lines in the screen at random.

She bought the laptop from Staples on a spur of the moment purchase a little over a year ago for college. She goes to college 500 miles away from me so it's a little difficult for me to look at the laptop for her.

Any ideas, Acer gurus? A broken ribbon perhaps?

Seems to be the case, or something got unplugged? Doesn't seem serious or expensive to repair, but have to actually open it up to be certain.

By the looks of it it's a broken ribbon/cable. Just to be on the safe side make her check if it works fine with an external monitor or even a TV set (via HDMI).

What model is it exactly? Looks like Aspire 5738 or 5740.

Yeah one of those I think, not sure off the top of my head. It's not a bad little computer for what she uses it for, but for the way she handles things, she should have got a Toughbook...

I've got her hooking it up to a tv tomorrow thru hdmi, I assumed that would narrow it down to either a display problem or "let's go laptop shopping" problem.

I can't imagine new ribbons are expensive for these, I'll have to have a look around here for a disassembly guide and parts, and whatnot.

I'll PM you some info. When you know what notebook is it you'll be able to find right parts on FRU list.
5738 and 5740 are similar so it's probably the same part number anyway.

Confirmed that the laptop does work when hooked up to an external monitor. I'm going to have her ship the laptop to me so I can take a look at it, any idea what I'm going to be looking at when it comes to the ribbon? I don't have much experience with the lcd part of laptops.

My first thought was "tight hinges" as that was a major issue some years back, and with you saying the bezel has come away too. Is the lid very tight ?

Impossible to diagnose at a distance... I suspect maybe physical damage to the screen from what you say.
