Hi my sister has the Acer Travelmate 5730 and it's a great little laptop. but the problem is it won't start up, now i used one of the Acer Aspire series, and i had my share of problems but this one is alien to me.
The charger works fine, when pluged into the laptop the light is orange, as soon as we press the power button to turn it on, the orange light goes off, if i press the power button and let go straight away, the light stays off for 5 seconds, if i hold the power button the light stays off for around 9-11 seconds, now the shop we went to says it's a connectivity problem, and i was looking around and i was thinking about the power jack (i'm not big on laptops, more of a desktop kind of guy, so if it doesn't have one lol at me!). Anyway, i'd love to know if anyone knew or had a way of knowing what my sisters problem is, as she'd like to sell this laptop, but needs to clean her HDD of school work and general stuff that she has on it before selling it, and would prefer it to be fully working before sending it away.
Appreciate any help put forward.

Hi, this could be a connection problem.
With my 9920g there are 3 connections. The wall plug, the external plug into the power unit and the cable connection into the laptop. This last one takes a lot of punishment as it's connected and disconnected every time I use the lappie.
Check all connections are secure and clean not gungy. -
Let us have a few more facts please !
Was it working on battery despite the charger issue or did it get 'like this' only after the battery ran down ? (i.e. the last she saw of it was a low battery save work /shutdown pop up)
When you say the charger works fine is that because you have tested it or used it successfully on another laptop or used another acer or universal adapter on this laptop without success ?
Does it make any difference if the laptop power jack is pressed gently in / up /down /sideways as you try to boot it ?
What sort of "shop" are you referring to . . did THEY perform any tests or just assess the size of your wallet ? -
Well it's only got about 2 hours battery life, so usually if it was unplugged it probably wasn't for long, as it's not my laptop i can't be truely sure on that bit, the charger does work fine because i have an acer aspire 7720 that i bought in 2007, an expensive laptop full of bugs with what i'd say poor parts yet the charger still charged it. We also tested with the battery in the travelmate in my laptop, and it works fine.
The shop did a free inspection, they took it apart had a look, and put it together, telling my sister that he couldn't fix it but also saying what the puddleduck said > connection problem.
@puddleduck When you talk about connection problems, would a new charger be a clear test of this, or is this something inside the laptop that needs replacing? As i stated before i'm not a laptop fanatic, i prefer desktops when it comes to the insides. -
If it is the connector, at least on this model it seems that it's not directly on the mainboard so that is good...

I guess The socket on the side of the case is connected with wires to the MB.
It is hard to say how they diagnosed the connection problem Without being able to fix it there and then - - especially when there is quite a lot of dismantling to do to get to these bits. Certainly the cost of replacing the socket /cable should be low -
If you have an alternative power unit it's worth trying it out. Then only the actual connection attached to the motherboard would still be untested.
You'd also confirm if the power unit itself is unreliable under load. Although this seems unlikely if you've used it successfully on another laptop. -
Yeah the power cable works fine on my other laptop, but yeah thanks for the help i guess i know what to do now.
