Hi,
I got an Acer Extensa 5420 a few months ago refurbished and at first everything seemed fine. A month or so later I noticed that the line out had a small crack in the middle of the green ring.. a little annoying but my headphones seemed to work fine so I just ignored it. After using the line out for a few months it's become more and more faulty. Now, when I plug in headphones no sound comes out, it doesn't even recognize anything is plugged in unless I have it turned at the exact right angle. I know the audio jack is just screwed up, but what options do I have to fix this problem?

Sorry for bumping, but could anyone help?

The options are simple... it needs a new socket
Only you know if dismantlng the notebook to get at and replace the socket is something you could do. If you are not use to working on gear like this then I would say not tbh... to much risk of causing more damage.
And you would have to find the exact replacement part too.
Which leaves you the option of local estimates for repair etc, or return to Acer. -
Do you know if Acer will fix my laptop and return it or will they exchange it for another one? I don't want to lose all the information on my harddrive.

Alos this is user damage so you will have to pay , but if you luky they will replace it -
Hi there,
another option would be, to get an external sound card. Just in case you don't trust Acer with your Laptop.
There are USB sound cards that are pretty cheap or you could also get a PCMCIA / PCI-E card - depending on the extension slot of your Laptop. -
So... would a USB Soundcard improve the sound quality of my machine? Maybe that's a good idea...
