Hi!
There were a few threads on this forum about installing Xp on Acer 5920, but I haven't seen any about installing Linus on this lappy. Did any one tryied to do that? Have you had any problems with drivers? What distribution have you used?
I'm thinking of byeing this laptop but I need Xp and linux sometimes for my work, and running them on VMWare doesn't seens to be a good idea...![]()

Kubuntu (7.04) works pretty good, but there are some flaws (installing from alternate CD instead of liveCD, problems with hibernation / sleep, media keys, etc.). More here:

But normal work is possible (I'm just sitting next to 5920G and writing this text under Kubuntu & Ff). -
Thanks for reply and for the links.

I ran Ubuntu 7.04 on my 5100. Ran quite smooth I must say. Would be a full time Ubuntu user if it wasn't for a few windoze based programs that I can't get to run properly in Linux.

Which Acer 5920 you got? I have a 5920-6470. It's a Centrino, so Intel graphics. Lots of folks on this forum have 5920's with Nvidia.
I'm relatively happy with my 5920 running Ubuntu 7.10. Here are the problems I've found so far.
DMA - DMA does not appear to be functioning on HDD or optical drive. This is a big deal. Commercial DVD's are unwatchable. Appears to be a kernel problem. I'm optimistic that it'll be fixed soon, hopefully by Ubuntu 8.04.
Sound - Left speaker not working. Headphones sound fine but don't kill the chassis speakers when plugged in. I tried the latest PCLOS (Gnome 2.2 something or another), it doesn't drive the left speaker either. PCLOS 2007 does. The next version of Ubuntu will use an entirely different sound architecture (PulseAudio) and I'm hoping that sound will be fixed.
Dual monitors - works but only as a mirror. Windows gives much better control over second monitor. They're working on Intel video drivers so keeping my fingers crossed.
Wireless - works but half as fast as in Vista. The 4965 wireless card is new and drivers should improve with next release.
On the bright side, Ubuntu flies compared to Vista. Much more responsive, screen looks nice and sharp, most of the F keys work. Even the internet and e-mail keys work!
I don't know about Bluetooth - haven't tested it yet. -
Mine is also with NVidia 8600GT. =)
But thanks for reply! -
I think the motherboard is probably pretty similar. And the Nvidia card may work better than the Intel graphics

Ive got Ubuntu 7.10 working fine on my 5920g w/ 8600m, 7.04 had issues with the video card but 7.10 will id the drivers automatically. I don't have the web cam working but I haven't put any time into it, not sure if its got any support. I also have problems with the touch pad, cant seem to get the drivers installed for scrolling etc. Overall I have no issues with it as I use it full time at college for programming, etc.
Linux on 5920?
