and that I have to either Launch start up repair or start windows normally. I've down the start up repair and it says that it is finished turns the laptop off and then restarts but when it gets to the boot up screen it just runs with the little bar with arrows going along for ages and doesn't progress so I have to switch the laptop off again which means next time I start it I go back to the initial problem.

I didn't get a recovery disk or anything with my laptop so not sure if there is a way of getting in and partioning the disk otherwise or rebooting the hard drive.

To be honest I'm not quite sure what I'm doing to fix it either so any easy instructions would be gratefully recieved and also if the worst comes to it I'm not too bothered if I lose my data there was nothing hugely important on there and I suppose if it comes to it would rather do that then pay to have it fixed somewhere, although any help that would enable me to keep my data would be great.

    Thanks

I don't know if I have it on. Is the hard disk based recovery ALT+F10ing it?

I only tried last night and fiddled about F2 and F12ing it along with the Start up repair and am at work this morning so will have to try again when I get home.

It might be that ALT+F10 enables me to fix it and get it all sorted, but I have no idea

Will there be an obvious walk through when pressing alt+f10 to backing up my c: drive. I realised I have a ton of music and that I'd rather not lose so if it can be saved would prefer to do it that way.

If you use the ALT+F10 function, It won't back up your data, just wipe it.

You could download a copy of a linux livecd and run this, then you would be able to backup all of your music etc onto your D:.

Hmmm sounds like I'm stuffed. No chance of downloading anything at work. Might give the Launch Start Up Repair another go and leave it running a while and see if anything happens. If not I'll just have to start from scratch.

Right I've bought my laptop into work tonight so I can have a crack at fixing it. Where/ what and how do I get backing up my data? Can I back it up onto the d: drive or something?
