If the drive is locked on Region 2, this usually means that you've changed the Region 5 times. The last time is what the drive permanantly locks itself at. I don't think changing firmware will help.

If you have ME (assuming Windows ME), you can create a boot disk that will allow you to boot into DOS. Some firmware disks that come from the manufacturer usually is in an image format. You just restore the image onto a floppy drive and boot off that disk. If it doesn't have this, just do the Windows ME boot disk option and you should be fine. It's located in the Control Panel under Add or Remove Programs.

You can try running apps like DVD Region Free. This will allow you to bypass the DVD's check to the drives region code, therefore allowing you to still watch your DVD's.
