I have an Acer Aspire 5022WLMi with an ATI Radeon Mobility X700, with a standard 1280x800 widescreen laptop screen resolution. I was looking to buy an external LCD monitor, but was wondering what the maximum resolution the VGA out could support. Would it be able to handle a 1680x1050 (WSXGA) monitor?

    Thanks.

My advice, take your laptop to a store, and test a few, check that it works with one similar (if not the same as) the one you want...

Best way to guarantee that it will work (I think it should, but I'm certainly not 100% ;)

Yes it should be able to. I believe the max resolution using the VGA interface is 2048x1536, and according to the X700's ATi website, the X700 will easilt handle 1680x1050.

    Thanks.

Are you sure the 2048x1536 maximum resolution is not for the laptop display only? I am confused by the next line on the ATI website:

Given that the Aspire 5020 series only has VGA output, what does this mean?

I took my laptop into a shop, where the guy was signally unhelpful. I don't about the US, but in the UK staff haven't heard of customer service. I wasn't allowed to try out any of the displays, since they weren't "set up for testing".

Just an update, in case anybody needs to know in the future: I managed to test my laptop with an Acer AL2016WB 20" monitor. It ran fine at the native resolution of 1650x1080, so I bought it. I can even run it as the primary monitor, with the laptop's screen providing a bit of an extension to the screen space.
