    Hello Experts ..

I am a Software Developer, and I have Acer Aspire 1640 (Notebook), bought it in Summer 2006, and I have re-formatted it at least 6-7 times since then. Now, in the past two years, I used it in my work and installed on it a heavy Softwares (i.e Oracle, .NET2.0, 3.0, 3.5 .. etc), hard drive always full (a few gigs free), get inficted by viruses many times .. etc.

Now, three days ago I did a reformat (The last time I formatted it was in Jan. 2008), and upgraded it's RAM to 2.25gigs, but after that I started to note several things :
    1) In the past when I insert a bad DVD/CD in the CD-Drive, it hangs, but as soon as I remove the CD from the driver it gets back to work as expected, but now it hangs and never get backs to normal and I have to shut it off by pressing the power key and start it again.

    2) The wireless does not work well, sometimes the signal is excellent, and within a few seconds it gives me (poor or out of rage signal) note that the router is 0.5m a way from it.

    3) After upgrading the RAM, I installed Oracle 11g, but it keeps consuming >80% of the CPU usage, and sometimes >95%.

    4) I have a C: and D: Drivers, I don't format D: Driver when installing a new XP version, so now when I open some of the folders it hangs.

So, is my laptop is about to dead? :) When I should know it is the time to buy a new laptop? Is there a common age (i.e 2 years max.) for these notebook?

Start researching on your next, new one.

    Buy it

By the time it comes, this one you have will still be functioning at minimum to move over files etc. and you will be a happy dude with a new laptop! (justifying purchase to yourself is what you need!!!)

I just did something stupid!! I bought another 1gigs of RAM, and after installing it, I checked control panel > system > general tab, and noticed that xp only recognized 1.99 Gigs!! so what is going on?

Thanks for your reply, it seems I will start searching for a new one.

Yep, start the search for a new companion.. it takes a while to find "the one" with exactly things you want it to do.. :D

Go fill out the FAQ and post a new thread for some quick suggestions on where/which systems you should be looking at.
