Hi all,
new to the board...
Upgraded my 5517 processor to a Turion TL-64 a few months back, following ecoholic's post located here... Thank you ecoholic!
Then I moved to Windows 7 64 bit, but still running with 3 GB of RAM the computer came with. I would like a bit more, as I'm running audio software with many samples and VST plugins...
Acer says the max RAM possible in the 5517 is 4GB, but considering the OS and the processor, I wonder if it could take up to 8GB... Anyone knows?
I wonder if motherboard or BIOS could prevent this to work...
I search the forums here, and ran several Google searches, but didn't find anything on that. I was about to purchase a single 4GB module off eBay to replace the 1GB module I have, and see what happens, but figured I'd run this here before I waist $40 or $50 bucks...
Thanks!
D.

The thing limiting it to 4GB DDR2 RAM will indeed be the motherboard and it won't support more than that unfortunitely.
You should go to RAM Memory Upgrade: Dell, Mac, Apple, HP, Compaq. USB drives, SSD at Crucial.com to confirm this. On this link you can select different models and it will return you with results for what RAM they take and how much. -
Hey thanks Campell!
I ran this question by Crutial and they confirm this. I got an email answer, but it is not posted on the Acer 5517 page yet. Here's a link to it anyway.
Also pasting here my question what they replied:
"Would this Aspire 5517 laptop support more then 2 X 2GB of memory? I replaced the processor with a Turion TL-64, and installed Windows 7 64bit on mine... Current RAM is 3GB (1 x 2GB and 1 x 1GB of PC2-5300). Could I go 1 x 2GB and 1 x 4GB? Or even better, 2 x 4GB? Thanks!"
Crucial Support from Meridian, Idaho said:
"The maximum memory that motherboard can support is 4GB so you would not be able to install more memory in that system."
This leads me to another question, but I'll do some research first, and start a new post if needed...
Cheers everybody!

The truth is, it may or may not support 2x4GB. The reason is that the memory controller is on the CPU itself. My 7535 with ZM-84 was said to support 2x2GB only, and everywhere I asked, they said no to 2x4GB. But I took my chance and it works. With RAM price so low, now is the time to try if you are curious.
