    My 5920G is dead!

    I tried installing Service Pack 1 and it won't boot. Microsoft has just sent me a Vista Home Premium Repair CD that will hopefully fix it. I have Recovery Discs, but then I'll lose all my data. This is the 2nd time that my 5920G has broke like this, is there a huge design flaw with this laptop?

    Is Acer always like this? It was such a high end laptop for its price (8600M GT, Core 2 Duo 1.5 Ghz, 2 GB RAM, HDMI, HD-DVD, for $1099), but I can never trust this company again.

    There's a good possibility the SP1 installation messed up the OS which in turn refuses to boot.
    I could be wrong though.

    You don't have to necessarily lose your data though.
    What you could try is download and burn Linux onto a CD and run it from there without actually installing it, and then retrieve your data from the HDD by storing it on a USB stick.
    After that you can easily re-install Vista.

    I don't think your boot problems are caused by the hardware.
    As previously stated, your problems began after you tried installing SP1 and once you rebooted the laptop, it wouldn't go into Windows.
    From the way it seems, it's the software's fault, not the hardware's.

    It's partly hardware because this has happened before, but last time it was when my laptop started getting blue screens 1-2 times a day and would freeze a lot and eventually it would be stuck at a black screen. When I start it up this time, it displays some Number (248/91435). I tried calling Acer like 6 months ago to extend my warranty but their Customer service was down for a while and by the time they were up I was like 2 days past the warranty so they wouldn't take my $100 to extend it for a year, so I can't take it to BestBuy to get it fixed for free. With what Deks said, that probably is true with SP1 messing up the OS, but this laptop has consistently given me problems. I'm now thinking about a Dell or HP, this laptop is definitely too risky to take to college and get blue screens while I'm working on important college reports.

    Have you tried installing XP on the laptop?
    If not, give it a go with that and see how the laptop behaves.
    If the issue repeats itself then it's possible the hardware is the culprit.

    Although ... you might also try updating your BIOS.
    That might potentially solve some problems as well.

    I used to get numerous bluescreens because of problemic drivers and softwares.
    If problem persists after a clean install and proper driver upgrades, then blame the hardware.
