    Hey,

I decided to do a test via the AMD site to see whether my Acer Aspire 5003WMLi laptop would run Windows Vista properly. OK, given the laptop specifications I'm not expecting Vista Premium performance with Aero, but just enough grunt to give me some futureproofing. Apparantly, the results generated says that I can't - at all! Despite upgrading the laptop with 2GB of RAM and a 100GB 5200RPM hard drive I can't run Vista due to the appalling graphics chip thats on it (SIS M760GX). Here's the result that the site gave me - link.

I know the SIS graphics chip is bad, I never thought it would be that bad to not even run Vista at all, or at least what the results say anyway!

I'm not sure, but I think if you have a score thats too low (Using the legit Microsoft Vista test), Vista will refuse to install.

I just find it barmy that Vista requires so much graphical power just to load up the transparent Windows. I mean I also have an IBM Thinkpad which uses an Intel Graphics chip, but under XP with Glass2k it runs all the transparency stuff really well. I really don't believe that you need a standalone card to generate the stuff.

You should still be able to run Vista albeit without Aero. I have run RC2 on a system with Intel extreme 2 which is as worse as the SiS. The only problem might be driver support for Vista from Acer/SiS. I would suggest getting the trial version & trying it out before buying Vista.

You should be able to run Vista without Aero. I am running Vista RTM (without Aero) on an Aspire 3002, with a Sempron 2800, 1.5GB RAM and an 80 GB HD.

All my scores are good except the 3D which is 1. Which means my overall score is 1 and Vista is running fine.

Good to know my 5672 is a go for any version of Vista. Since I probably will not upgrade it for a year, I doubt it will still be running by then. It just gives me that feeling it's going to die. Maybe that's just the Acer feeling.
