Hello there,
I noticed these days that my laptop won't go into sleep mode anymore. It used to work like a charm, but now the screen goes black while the hard drive and the fan keeps spinning. I can't wake it either from this state, so the only thing left to do is hold the power button for a few seconds to turn it completely off.
I THINK the problem emerged after I installed the new driver for the WIFI card. Though I rolled my system back to the old driver, but no success.
Any suggestions on how to get my sleep mode back up and running?
Thanks in advance,
Jelle
System info: Acer Aspire 5102, Windows vista x64.

This may be a duh reply, but just in case:
Did you go into the power settings and assure that 'never turn off hard drives' isn't selected as the energy scheme. -
Thanks for your suggestion though! -
My Laptop does this from time to time. Not sure why or why it suddenly works again. But Now as I have stated in another thread it freezes totally in windows or before it has totally started. The only way to turn it of is pulling out the battery and removing the power lead. I am going to try a system restore but hope you get your problem sorted. If you do please post results here. I am using windows XP and made no changes BTW!

Hi,
My sleep mode is functioning again. Somewhere on the net I found this solution:
in a command prompt, type:
This worked for me. I have no idea what it does -
Thanks for sharing must try and sort out my other problem of the freezing system. http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=140056

powercfg -h on -> Turns on Hibernation.
I had a similar problem where Vista would not go to Sleep. I resolved it by changing the ACPI advanced options under Multimedia Setting -> When Sharing Media -> To "Allow the computer to enter Away mode". On battery and when Plugged in. -
It seems the problem is caused by VISTA.
Other brands also have the same problem.
Look at the link below:

DO not install Nvidia 165.01 drivers. They disable sleep/hibernate mode. THe only way to wake up the computer is to do a manual shutdown by holding the power button...which is not good for the computer.

Right Click the Taskbar Battery/AC Power Icon
Below the Power Plans selections click "More Power Options"
Click "Change Plan Settings" for the specific plan you want to modify
In the lower left of "Edit Plan Settings" select "Change Advanced Power Settings"
There you can scroll down to the Multimedia Settings I mentioned before. -
The reason why I was back able to go into sleep mode (as I mentioned earlier) was that I changed my power mode to "High performance", which has the "Allow the computer to enter Away mode" as a default setting.
Now I changed the "balanced" en the "power saver"-mode also to this setting and I can sleep again -
This definitely fix my problem. See the link below:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/930091
1. Click Start, type device in the Start Search box, and then click Device
Manager in the Programs list.
2. In the User Account Control dialog box, click Continue.
3. In Device Manager, expand Mice and other pointing devices.
4. Right-click the USB mouse, and then click Properties.
5. Click the Power Management tab.
6. UNCHECK the "Allow this device to wake the computer" check box, and
then click OK.
My aspire won't go into sleep mode anymore
