    Hi,

I am a new Acer owner (timelineX 4830tg).

I opened it up to see where the memory upgrade would go and found a hw switch with the letters "pw on / pw off" which was at the "pw ofF" position. (see attached image)

Does anyone know what this switch do?

    Thanks!

Really? So, why is it off? That would mean the battery is off when you buy it. Are you sure? Tx for the reply.

    4830tg comes with non-removable battery,
if u turn the switch to off, it will act like your battery has been removed, so you need to plug in the charger to use.

Well, I've turned it off and the battery works normally. It charges and it performs normally. So, I guess it's not for the battery...

I do not know, I tried to help on a forum and could not. I spent almost months trying to resolve this problem of my hidden partition. Until I remembered the recovery DVD's before I did delete this hidden partition and through them to get redo. Without systems support here in Brazil.

    and hurricane21 are right.

Thanks to "Whatthehellman" for helping finding the reason why it's "OFF" when you open it, for some reason I can't see his post but I quote:

"The switch does disconnect the power, but what you fail to realize is that there is a mechanical switch attached to the cover you take off to discover that switch, which, upon closing, sets the switch to "ON", and upon being opened, to "OFF". Opening the cover and discovering that the switch is set to "OFF" does not mean it has been set to "OFF" all the while"

That means if anyone wants to use their computer w/o battery, he'd have to physically remove that small piece of plastic.

    Thank you all.
