I regularly work with the Notebook and external monitor in Extended Desktop mode. The automatic or manual setting of the resolution of the external monitor is often less than its native HD resolution, and on those occasions the resolutions menu does not include the external monitor's native HD 1920 x 1080 option, but only lower modes.

The menu restriction is seen on Windows' display properties interface and the graphics card's own properties interface.

I have spent hours on this problem, while at other times, the correct HD resolution appears on both monitors. I have even saved this correct profile in a Profiles Manager provided by the Graphics card's interface, but when the insufficient resolution problem occurs, activating the saved Profile has no effect.

Is this problem an issue of the Graphics Card, Notebook, Monitor, Operating System, Windows Updates? How to resolve it??? Any help most appreciated. Thanks!

    Hi,

have you already tried another cable (VGA, HDMI - what are you using?)?

Sorry I hadn't specified. The external monitor has only one connection, the VGA type. Would a defective cable cause the problem? (that surprises me). Yesterday the system filpped to proper resolution again, and today it was still behaving well. So I will have no way of checking your suggestion until things go wrong again. Then I will. Thanks
